I don't buy the idea that we have to pound the crap out of each other in a ring to prove that everyone is honest about their skills. If you want to learn anything, you definitely need to spar; but sparring is not a competition, no one

Every coder should if you ask me; I consider C, Forth & Lisp to be the brightest shining stars in PL design. Each of them offers a unique approach cut down to it's core. If you prefer a more convenient and less dogmatic approach, I

I spent some time comparing Python's [0] map/filter and comprehensions against Snigl [1]. Comprehensions are just plain faster, especially if you perform say filter and map at the same time. That and a lambda implementation that o

Regarding rotl/rotr, that was a typo in the example; they rotate the top three items left or right, I find Forths choice of 'rot' arbitrary but that may be a consequence of how the pieces fit together in Snigl. And I agree, t

Sure thing, thanks for the help with IO stream workarounds for mac. It's a complete re-implementation to solve some of the show stoppers that Cixl ran into. Snigl should build mostly anywhere using any C11 compiler for example, so that

You're welcome :) I hear you, it's very much a crash course so far. I've tried to keep the examples nimble enough to allow decoding any foreign constructs. This is unfortunately the level I'm operating at, because it

Just noting that JIT means speculating from what you've seen so far, what I'm doing is proving invariants and removing redundancy at compile time. Which means more predictable performance, since the code stays the same once it sta

Agreed; C, Forth & Lisp are all acquired tastes. Which is fine, one size never fits all. Just wanted to mention some alternatives to LuaJIT, since I don't think it's a viable way forward for languages of this scale. Likewise!

I do the same thing with a twist [0], since I'm not very fond of some of Lua's design choices. Lack of a decent type system, the table mess, etc. And I think Forth and Lisp make better glue languages. Can't stop smiling these

I like a lot of things about Lua, the focus on embedded use and keeping the implementation nimble among others. LuaJIT is very impressive, but it's already drowning in its own complexity. I spent the last two years more or less full ti

Sorry, still not getting it. If an implementation provides offsetof and it doesn't work, that implementation would go out of fashion in a heart beat. Where is the practical use of this information? How is this even an argument?

The best techniques for MMA, it's still a sport; more realistic than traditional boxing, but then that's a pretty low bar. I've been training martial arts for 25 years and I wouldn't put myself in there for all the money

Do you have any examples of methods that will get you there more effectively than practice in any discipline? Because I honestly can't think of anything.

I fail to see your point here. sgl_baseof uses offsetof with a valid struct type and a valid field name, so where is the UB? Unless you feed it an invalid pointer, but then all bets are off.

The type in question is the containing C struct type. Think of sgl_baseof as the opposite of offsetof. I didn't come up with it myself of course, it's probably older than I am; I borrowed it from the Linux kernel. The other link i

Just say no, that path leads to madness. C is not the right language for fancy abstractions, it will come back and bite your head off when you least expect it. It can be done, but that doesn't mean worth doing. GObject suffers from som

I went the other way, started writing C++ in 95 and digging into C properly around 2005. Just make sure that the cure isn't worse than the disease. It's all to easy to slip into identifying with C++ because of the substantial effo
