This article pits individual freedom/empowerment against the family unit and argues the latter is vanishing and we need it back. A familiar topic lately. I’m afraid this is a false dichotomy. If we’re actually trading the family unit f

I agree that it might be offensive to the actual person who is being singled out in this article, if they’re reading the article. It also occurred to me that this person is fictitious or semi fictitious in which case it’s not just inoffensi

There’s a specific creative tone to this article that incorporates these expressions. There is narrator persona who has a style of voice. I think you and the other people who are seemingly offended are missing this?

As it’s widely known, more often than not “criticism” of open source software quickly devolves into hate and toxicity. Helpful criticism is great but be careful with defending the “criticism culture” around foss, it’s often angry unhappy pe

Tl;dr they get a lot of requests from customers for a GCP integration so they lament whether they should have used GCP for their deployment.

I live and work in USA but spend time in Europe. I noticed that in Europe SAP is wildly popular and a large percentage of “software engineers” are “SAP/ABAP programmers”. I have some engineer friends in Eastern Europe and they’re takin

It seems super strange to adopt the market leader’s processes. You’d think the spirit should be that you can outdo/outcompete then instead of adopting what they’re doing...

Maybe on average across many fields and job positions? But I definitely don't believe this as a universalism. The "catalog chic", gym culture and dieting trend in SV is fairly new. 20 years ago it was graybeard chic. Alan Cox

Presumably you have to pay income tax on base+rsu so shave off >50% from these figures if you live in California? Then rent can run you 35-50k a year or more in the bay, and then other expenses? So 600k a year can be more like <200k s

This article has beef with artificially imposed internal deadlines, not deadlines in general. A deadline can be for a ton of legitimate reasons, like delivering a signed contract by the agreed upon date.

The comment is talking about implementing sequential consistency: simplistically, if you have f();g() in a thread, and f() modifies the system's state, those modifications should be visible to g().

Sequential consistency issues can appear in pretty much any system, not just distributed systems. E.g., a consumer thread that processes items from a queue. If you push into the queue and need subsequent read operations to see the processed
