You also have to account for the "pain in the neck" factor. A washing machine isn't a toaster, it's heavy and hard to move, and annoying to wait on a repair person or replacement.

Do you know basic electronics? I bought one of those cheapie elegy arduino starter kits on Amazon and actually found it to be great. Lots of common commodity sensors and parts, and a useable manual to walk you through them. It helped spring

Generally subsidies don’t apply if you’re getting an employer subsidy, and they drop off quickly as you rise over the poverty line. I have no clue how the math works on average in terms of 35k jobs offering a subsidy at all, vs the marketpl

Asking how to work in chips is kind of like asking how to be an engineer -- there are a million sub-specialties so lots of paths. Generally the degrees are Electrical Engineering, with classes along the lines of https://ocw.mit.

If you're into this, Huygens Optics has an awesome series where he builds a wafer stepper at home. His is a little less advanced than Sam Zeloofs but the videos are way better -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_w0Z2Y5v

FYI you might like this series from Huygens optics, although his more targeted at microscale lenses than transistors. https://youtu.be/_w0Z2Y5vaAQ

I wonder if many of these more transactional tablets would be amenable to automated transcription/translation. I imagine that names would be rough, but lists of goods and prices seem manageable. I've dabbled a little in Akkadian

It's not the years (roughly speaking) -- move college to 16, or 20, the point still stands. For many people it's the first time they leave the only family/friend/schooling setting they've ever lived with. Some peopl

18-22ish is a formative time for many people. If you were fully formed at age 18 with just exposure to the family any friends you grew up with that’s great, but the new perspective and easing into freedom of college is valuable for many peo

I was thinking more of a "verified by stripe" type flow. They just need a location and a hash that prevents multiple signups. I realize that's just moving the problem, but hey the whole idea is impractical anyway.

Somewhat tangential to the article, but here's what I would like: A site like reddit, but you have to get your government ID verified when you sign up. You can still pick any alias you want, but mods see your location within, say, 100

If you're into lasers at all, les' lab is a great channel. It's really an example of the best part of youtube, just a dude who knows some stuff explaining how things work and showing off shop-made projects.

The little “v notch” that they call a wire cutter is sharp enough to go through packing tape. Not sharp enough to bother you though, any more than a house key on the same ring. It’s not a tool I’d use to break down 1000 boxes a day, but it’
