Eh, sounds like smart preparation to play the game on its terms. Did those questions end up being seriously relevant to the work? If so, then you prepared yourself better for the job by learning the answers. If not, well, then maybe it'

While not strictly related to computation, sqlite is a non-starter for deploying to PaaS without a persistent file system. "SQLite on Heroku" [1], essentially: don't do it, switch to postgres. I suppose it would work with AWS

Are you referring to the VS debugger and msvsmon? The VS debugger is an excellent tool, but stopping the world each step is different than how the Clojure REPL setup described by the parent works. Did/do people really develop applicati

I should have prefaced that my comment was initiated in light of one peer’s suggestion to get out of startups to make a living. The fact that salaries presumably at established companies in one region can come in well under startup salaries

Good question. Indianapolis seems to have a thriving tech community, but the Glassdoor data for senior software engineer average base pay comes in a full 30k under your startup number: $99k (based on 1081 anonymous submissions). LinkedIn sh

Turns out that feed is too noisy. In addition to the stories, it includes an entry every time he interacts with a comment on a feed.

You are right, I would have to be asking the reader to special case medium or search up the path from the post. In this case it is Feedly which is excellent and does special case the xkcd alt text so I was a little surprised they didn’t do

Thank you! Subscribed. I guess my feed reader wasn't quite as good as I thought. Well, medium got me signed up in the meantime :)

I had to create an account, begrudgingly, to follow. This is just silly when I have a perfectly good feed reader that works for everyone else I care to follow.

I’m glad it wasn’t just me on Google oauth. I wanted to hit a spreadsheet script with curl. I ended up copying login cookies out of the browser and pasting into the script just to get something to test the endpoint, knowing it won’t work ne

Are people reading the rest of the thread? Linus admitted mistaking an acronym and changed his tone from "pushing garbage for unclear reasons" to just "garbage patches".

Great insight. The most moving part of David Letterman’s new show was when Barack Obama asked Dave if he ever feels lucky (yes, the questions were supposed to go the other direction, generally). Dave immediately caught the meaning and ran w

"Really, after every Olympics I think I fell into a major state of depression," Phelps said. Bruce Springsteen talks a lot about his depression in his memoir and it sounds like this, dropping off a cliff when returning home afte

Interesting connection to apply flow to this issue and point out drawbacks from not reckoning with the things not focused on. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi wrote about applying flow to much more than one’s main skill, such as personal relationshi

That makes sense. The answers I refer to read just like a slightly annoyed text message reply to a family member who should know better than to ask.

This topic comes up occasionally and we see lots of answers involving plain text and wikis. It seems like there is still room for some perfect solution to the OP's problem with just the right feature set. Something with the stellar web

I think you're right. That sounds exactly like something amazon would do and how people would respond. I must have turned those emails off, which makes seeing the answers utterly stupefying.

That is an interesting use of gmail drafts. I'm sure you stretched the usability to the limit and found pros and cons going to a wiki. I use orgmode, starting with a buffer with a few headings, URLs, and paragraphs on a topic. The buff

It is absurd how people actually do this all the time in Amazon product questions. Will it work with my Samsung phone? "I don't know." Does it come with batteries? "I think it did."

I thought UWP Desktop Bridge might allow enough desktop access to support packaging a Windows service. Nope, the Bridge is not designed for that purpose and Windows services are explicitly not allowed. https://docs.microsoft.com

Oddly enough, even here in central Indiana a snowblower is only needed about once in one or two seasons. Most snows are 2" or less and handled with the shovel easier than getting the snowblower out and warmed up. But when you need it,
