I wonder how many implementations of the calculations there are. Do all the commercial GPS and phone manufacturers write this on their own, or is there a tested version they can license?

I think you mean Reactive Extensions since that uses observables. React(.js) is about component rendering as functions of app state and tries to get away from explicit observation. I've used Rx with some UI stuff but have not found it

Good laughs chasing links: - Simon Chatham: "PuTTY is a Win32 Telnet and SSH client. The SSH protocol code contains real-life use of this coroutine trick. As far as I know, this is the worst piece of C hackery ever seen in serious prod

Useful flexibility from protocol buffers there. To me it seems like having to change all references for a breaking API change could be a debilitating amount of work in some cases. Do you then make your breaking change to a branch and lobby

Nice list. What then are the mechanics of making a breaking change in a library, file format, network protocol, etc. in the single repo system?

+1. I couldn't quite tell if the story was meant to be cynical or not, but I find it inspirational in light of the many sad stories of those who make the leap for what seems like a good opportunity and end up in a human trafficking nig

Accessible, indeed. PW makes things look so easy. I have a few projects on the TODO list thanks to them. Fine Woodworking has nice stuff, too, like this workbench: http://www.finewoodworking.com/item/18985/still-do

Woodworking magazines, woodworker supply shops, fine woodworking forums. Start digging around for what you're interested in and you'll find them.

Congrats on diving in and doing it. You made it, it's done, it works. That has to be satisfying to use every day. If it cracks, it cracks. You can always repair it, distress it further, or just live with it. It will still hold the comp

We are so used to tailoring one-off solutions in software that we can't imagine just taking some boring old woodworking plan and using it as is to quickly gain experience and produce a solid first result without R&D headaches. But

It makes sense in a large park but not for personal use? Sounds like you're ok with scaling the noise to the size of the job? It's really not a marginal 15 minutes if you're dealing with any number or large trees. Then there&

Growing up I wanted a smooth, green lawn for playing sports. Then I grew up and realized what that entails. Now my lawn is as weedy, hard, and bumpy as anything out there!

I get a nice mix in Indiana. In the spring the lawn is green and thick. I have to mow it once a week. In the summer the lack of water slows and eventually stops the growth. After early July, I mow only one more time the rest of the year. Co

I have installed FreeMind many times over the years, but I also fall back on org-mode and Dropbox. The quick mouse and arrow navigation and visual layout of FreeMind is appealing, but once you're invested in org-mode, it's hard to let go. I
