Very fond memories of the Speccy. We got ours for Christmas 1982 with the Horizons demo cassette and Hungry Horace. I learned BASIC and then Z80 machine language (using Terri Baker's "Mastering Machine Code on Your ZX Spectrum&quo

Love this! I think I just got pounced by a fellow HN reader because we were both using the same strategy. I think a leaderboard - or at least a record of your wins/losses would be cool. The extra click to confirm a move isn't off-

I would go with even less - a 1% to 2% dilution is what I normally go for, but only after tasting the whisk(e)y neat. Some open up better than others with the addition of a few drops of water. For example, a particularly good Balblair whisk

Most of these seem like false dichotomies to me. > If you’ve never been robbed, you’re spending too much time locking doors. The time my home was broken into was a traumatic and violating experience. It caused me to increase security rat

Oh...it's only after reading the comments that I know what's going on. I didn't find it intuitive either.

I have an old photo somewhere of 8 of us standing on the girder-like front bumper of a 1970s Saab 900. They were solid!

I've owned and loved Saabs. The 900 was absolutely bulletproof. The 9-3 I owned less so. The innovative mechanism that also locked the gear stick when the ignition key was removed was genius! Maybe it's just me, but this article s

Pity. I used to read it regularly when I was starting in web dev in the late 90s and it was genius (even with the Metafilter thing). I browsed the archive last year during the Christmas break for a nostalgia trip!

I enjoyed The Etymologicon by Mark Forsyth. Also, if you are a member of a public library, you can often get free access to the full Oxford English Dictionary online, which has detailed etymologies.

Although, Timex (technically) was the manufacturer. The ZX Spectrum, at least, was built in the Timex factory in Dundee [0] [0] https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-29122873

I ordered it from Amazon and had the same issues...the cover was terrible quality and looked like it had been printed on someone's inkjet from the 90s. It was still a great read, though.

I've switched off all voice-activated devices in my home. I'm not sure how long the longest recording was...I'll go back over the data to have a look, but the one that really broke my heart was about 20 seconds during which m

I had exactly the same experience when I saw Caravaggio's "The Taking of Christ" in person recently. I was familiar with the image, but I was blown away by how incredible the painting really is.

This reminds me of an old electronic organiser / PDA that was available in the 80s/90s that had just five (I think) keys for typing. Letters were formed by pressing the keys in combination. Skilled users could type very quickly on

Yep, that's pretty much how I solved it too. I had (and still have) no idea how to apply the Chinese Remainder Theorem. Looking back at my solution, I just iterated through the input, which I'd mapped to a Python list.

It's great to have AoC back again. Last year was my best yet, where I managed to get up to day 23. This year, I'm focusing on keeping the solution to as few lines of code as possible.

We lost Daren Pearcy earlier this week - creator of the awesome RZX archive and, sadly defunct Specchums, and now Bernie Drummond. Very sad. Head Over Heels was an amazing concept and game.
