This! I've had an iPhone since 2010, and SMS messages were always in green. I haven't consciously noticed the green bubble getting harsher over time, but that doesn't mean it hasn't.
I rarely use SMS or iMessage now anyway - most of my messaging is done through WhatsApp or Telegram.
