If there was never an "old way" of doing things that didn't involve the new TrustedInstaller system, then would we even be thinking twice about these new restrictions? Or would we just see the restrictions as part of the desi

This seems like the same kind of argument as saying that because JSON doesn't support the number formats I like, it would be better to use a notation that doesn't support types at all. Well, I think the reality has shown that in f

Certainly there is a lot of legacy with the registry, but how would any of these issues be improved by moving to a file based config? All these issues could still exist under that model, and there would be new issues too. Like for example,

This comment has gone grey but I think it is an important point. Our basic expectancies for what makes a comfortable life are higher than ever. Is that an ethical problem or just a result of more/better technology? I'm not really

I don't think the other poster was imagining a language that retained compatibility with C, but rather a new language altogether. Of course it would be impossible to change this aspect of the language if retaining compatibility with C

In fact you can apply the single ampersand & operator to booleans in Java, and just like in the example here it has the same behaviour as && but with no short-circuiting.

Other than this particular edge case it's not obvious to me why bitwise operators shouldn't be applicable to boolean values. Aren't they just single-bit vectors? Of course it makes sense that logical operators wouldn't b

Doesn't the P40 use the same chip as in the 1080 Ti? While the card may not strictly be a gaming GPU, it seems to be roughly equivalent in power to gaming GPUs from several generations ago.

Single "big bang" atomic commits that update both the client and server with new features usually aren't practical, I can agree with that. I think the real intention of the "atomic commits" idea is a total ordering

If you have zip codes, don't store those in a numeric type (doesn't matter if it's Excel, R, or any other system) Zip codes aren't numbers, they are strings that happen to contain only numeric characters

DHCP is a mechanism to automatically configure clients with useful defaults, like a DNS server. It's not a system for enforcing network policies. There was never supposed to be any requirement to observe what DHCP tells you.

That problem isn't solved by DoH, you still need to hardcode the DoH server IP there too if you intend to bypass the network level settings. So a proprietary system would be no different. All the major appliance vendors (Google, Amazon
