Totally agree. This has also been my experience having recently transitioned from FE to BE. Even if FE is easier to demo, there's less appreciation for the underlying complexity.

Nope, that would just up the bar further. Interviews are not an exam, they're a filter.

Describing or visualizing the algorithm is one thing. Identifying that you need to use some variation of that algorithm and then writing flawless and optimal code that handles all corner cases in a 20 minute job interview, is an entirely di

It's "Top Secret". What's not so secret is that CSEC pays low and kills your career growth.

This seems like an even worse arrangement than working from an office. Most tech jobs demand time, focus and a strong wifi connection. Good luck doing that from the jungles of Brazil.

I used to think it would be cool to work in defense. That was before I learned how often poor and innocent people are killed in drone strikes. Now I would never go anywhere near that industry.

I can see why this would happen. On stimulants you might be too eager to start working on a problem before considering all options. But from my experience, if you're aware of how the medication can distort your thinking, you can counte

"They never came up with any prospects and two months later, they contacted me to see if I found a job yet. I told them that I thought that was supposed to be their job." Not taking ownership of your own job search is a red flag.

Just drive to a starbucks and treat that as your office. Why would you want to be herded like cattle?

I don't think there's anything "wrong" with tech hiring. It may not be ideal but every approach has its trade offs.

Transparent pay and WFH will give power and freedom back to the people. Corporations left uncontested will selfishly take as much as they can.

Bad idea. Scarcity artificially increases percieved value. This is how you make something more addictive, not less.

Yep, this is how reality works. Have to be careful about what you ask. That's why I never bothered asking my company if I could permanently WFH, just went along with everything until I found a new job.

Right on. If they think you're about to leave, they'll also be less likely to promote you. Focusing on switching jobs when you already have a stable job puts you in a win-win situation.

On a side note, I wonder how interested we'll be in Mars once the novelty wears off. Will it still be a place where we send our best and brightest? Or a place where we send those who have few other options? My bet is on the latter.

I'll also add my vote for wfh. Everything is better at home. Home gym, home office, better mattress, etc. I never realized just how much better it was until I tried it and now I don't ever want to go back.

I've also discovered that this type of bottom up approach is faster than the top down approach. Starting with an example gives a more concrete frame of reference. I don't think this is just a matter of personal preference either.
