+1 for using protobufs. I'll go a step further and suggest using textprotos for configuration files. You get validation out of the box for free (making it hard to mis-type your keys), along with a strict contract for your configuration

Another +1. I've found that it takes a lot of scans to get a solid representation of the tree, but I love the way they show you the quality of the scan (LEDs with well known positions are green, poorly are red, and mid is yellow). I

While I was at Google I was loaned out to the Android team to work on contact synchronizing. There was a problem that I was running into, but it was an extremely rare situation. I pulled aggregated data from production, and it looked like i

I suspect that D.J. Bernstein's preferred apples are of the silicon variety, but I could be mistaken. He is from New York, one of the early states where Honeycrisps were grown, but Long Island, which doesn't have much agriculture.

Neat writeup. I did a very similar thing in Rust, but to solve a different problem. I wanted to be able to easily make nice rich command line arguments for bash scripts without cluttering up the script too much. My minimal demo is: $

I'll throw my hat in the ring. I don't think that this is truly the primary mechanism. Maybe a contributing one, but definitely not the predominant cause. Let's say that the average woman wants to have children every 3 years.

I was hoping the article was about using a Docker container * as* your development environment. Talk about easily compartmentalizing and standardizing your projects across machines. Imagine if you got to a new job and your setup instructio

Most Google engineers don't do anything more complicated than the hello world examples. Probably far less complicated because they don't need to do any repo setup, it all just works out of the box. Most engineers just make simple

Ah, mis-remembered that part. Maybe I was under that impression because the clean zoom wasn't something that was exposed to the end-user. Early SVG plugins made zoom and pan part of their UI so it was a little more obvious.

As someone with ADHD, this article format is literally the worst. - Text is broken up into tiny little chunks that I can't really get into flow - Images are taller than my screen - Images don't have anything to do with the story,

I was on the Adobe SVG implementation QA team, focused on the javascript testing. I think that comment got some stuff wrong. Critically, SVG became a W3C recommendation in 2001, but Macromedia wasn't acquired by Adobe until 2005. W3C w
