What about things like Hadoop HBase or Bigtable? Surely those are aiming to replicate an RDBMS like environment but on a massively more scalable platform.

It would seem to me that they should have planned on this kind of scenario. It doesn't have to be specific they just have to be able to plug some words into a statement about something tragic, but uncomfirmed on their network. It's basic ri

I was at Mashup Camp this week and one of the guys from IBM pointed me at a library called Flare ( http://flare.prefuse.org/ ) which has a number of prefabricated visualizations you can run on data. The discuss we had was along the lines of

The bottom line, if Detroit wants money it needs to justify why it's not just going to sink it into the same failed structure it currently has. Mitt makes some excellent points, it's not that we shouldn't support this industry, we should ju

This seems like SubEthaEdit but for the web. Maybe it was the barrier to entry or the technical wrangling to get it working that killed SEE; But even among Mac-heads I haven't seen it being used in years. I'm not sure how much this will fly

Personally my feeling is that chemical imbalance is the symptom not the cure. It takes a very mature society to practice preventative medicine. We clearly aren't that society (look at the obesity epidemic). I'm sure that people who are ment

I think this clearly shows education doesn't have too much to do with mental health. People with a lot of education can be just as sad and disheartened as anyone else. Layoffs aren't a happy time for anyone, but for someone who was already

I wonder where the media get these random stats from. "We asked 3 engineering students and 2 of them said they would consider an engineering job over a banking job" I'd be surprised if anyone could plot a graduating trend in such a short pe

I think Mr Winer forgets the element of competition. Advertising is not just about highlighting good products it's also teaching consumers to pick your good products over your competitor's good product. Is generic Ibuprofen different from A

Disclaimer: I'm an evangelist. So I think the problem is that some horrible sales shills are using my job title. I wish they would stop, or die. Either way. The concept of evangelism (in terms of the word) is someone who believes in somethi

It's interesting to me that the spammers can recover their operations in merely a few days. Few organisations I can think of could move their entire infrastructure to another provide from a hard shutdown in that amount of time. I also find

This is easily the most interesting thing I've read all week. I was talking to some of our systems engineers about the size of the Hadoops clusters at Yahoo. I was pretty impressed with having access to thousands of machines with 10s of pet

I think that's really smart. There isn't much point building your own search engine now unless you are very large. There are normally a few great alternatives with some kind of partnership arrangement out there to use instead.

I'm sick of seeming posts like this. No one else can tell you if IE matters to your site. You (I hope) have statistics on who uses your site you can see if a significant part of your community uses IE6. If it's less than 10% maybe you could

I don't see any evidence of statistical analysis on this at all. People are touted raw figures as valid without any removal of bias. More than that while it's cool it's 20% that still leaves 75+ % as IE and I'd be surprised if most of that

I'd also like to see this compared on a range of javascript test suites like John Reisig did recently. Good job on the quick test results though.
