While it's funny, it's also pretty sad. I value HN so much. Thank you all for remaining conscious, and engaging in such stimulating debate.

Immad I'm curious how you plan to compete with Kongregate, et al. What's the value add? One of the things I notice about Kongregate, as a level 16 user (sad, huh?) is that "badges" play a large role for me. I don't have an infinite amount o

I'd actually recommend Captivate from Adobe (it was a Marcomedia product). The reason being is it's awesome for mastering videos. It seems to run acceptably in VMWare fusion too. I've used iShowU to capture video on my Mac but then mastered

Some days I hate the Web. Why does even business week get nailed with a bunch of jingoistic nonsense in their comments. I was hoping to read some interesting and informed thoughts, instead the comments read like Digg.

It's interesting that users assume you are jerks when you ask them to register no matter what your brand, or the information you ask for. Registration has become synonymous with ways to sneak in email newsletters.

Arrington has no sense of humor. I respect a politician better who shows their humanity. It also shows that she has some understanding of the people who use the Internet or at least someone close to her does. That is not a bad thing.

I know Joel has read it, Joel is one of the biggest blogging proponents of a lot of their philosophy. I only meant to be a bit tongue-in-cheek. I don't think Joel is trying to rip those guys off at all.

I thought this was going to be full of quirky insight into Bucky's life, and I was right! This is a great article with some pretty sage advice. I'm definitely going to be buying the book referenced in the article.

You could read this research, or just have read Peopleware from, what, 15 years ago? DeMarco and Lister nail everything you've ever thought about working in an office. If you haven't read this you should have! http://www.amazon.com/Peoplew

I think his point was that cost-benefit analysis is subjective. Your supposition that it's not limited to monetary concerns alone is valid, but perhaps naive. The fact that most people don't do a "proper" analysis is the very nature of bias

I think his point was that some benefits are intangibles like "Freedom" as opposed to quantifiable gross product increases. In the context of environmentalism a "cleaner planet" is mostly an intangible because on that scale it mostly doesn'

I think you have a great point. Essentially when making a cost-benefit analysis you need to have a shared understanding of what constitutes costs and benefits. In the case of slavery the justification puts the costs and benefits on the side

What's interesting in this article to me is the clinical services community acting like a nepotistic clique. "There aren't enough skilled people". Bullshit. Every industry has it's specialist knowledge. That should be some degree be irrelev

I wonder how this lines up with Ebay. As soon as someone has put a meager bid in they feel a sense of ownership. This might explain some of the bidding wars as people fight not just to win, but also not to loose something they now see as th

Jeff's point is kind of trite. I imagine people that routinely had to substitute 10.2 from 10.21 would notice. This title should be something like "Don't expect much of a buzz if you don't change the UI". Swombat's comment perfectly highlig

So, essentially, the author who I assume is a Java programmer doesn't get Prototypal inheritance and wishes to make Javascript into Java. It's vaguely interesting looking at how he did it, the actual output itself, not so much. You'd be bet

You have to know where to go, what to buy, and what to cook. I've been a vegan for a number of years now and I could live off $60/mo if I wanted to. The main point is convenience. If you don't want the effort of preparing food then it costs

Interestingly I think this article misses a fundamental point. I have a dear friend, a long time artist (who went to Goldsmiths and the Royal Academy) and who paints 8 paintings a week, rain, snow or shine. He has always talked about the ne

I was disappointed the author flaked out of drawing his own conclusions. I felt that he raised some reasonable, if obvious, points about the dismissal of new mediums throughout the history of art.
