Surely that's not a bad thing. Humility isn't a bad thing in a person but in business it's not a helpful attribute. At least when TC started he was the business, so self-promotion was a must.

I'd be interested to see a list of non-Google products using it. I've seen lots of presentations on Gears from people like Dion and it looks great but I guess I felt like it would take off more and I don't feel like I've seen that yet.

I've met Gary and seen him speak live over a webcast and he is just a big kid. That's not to say he isn't very smart. We were with a couple of the Youtube folks and we spent lunch discussing monitization of that platform. Gary had some grea

There are lots of ways to define quality. The problem is how much measure people put in them. Guilt or coolness can be a good driver and so they are often used instead of reasons based on quality. One of the other commenters pointed out tha

I'm curious if Amsterdam is missing the deadly car drivers that we have in San Francisco. I haven't been riding a bike in SF long but it feels a lot like London for the hate-hate relationship between cyclists and drivers.

I guess this was a good way for Python to reach new and younger audiences that haven't seen their magic before. On a side note I'm somewhat surprised to see gizmodo actually call the MPAA and RIAA "a bunch of pricks". Not that it isn't true

Unless you have a business relationship with whoever you rely upon then you are in trouble. Even then you should be ready to jump ship. Remember when S3 and EC2 went down? If all of those services that rely on it were ready to jump onto ano

Actually point in case, it was Paul who submitted his story about "Communicating with code" which currently has about 120 upvotes. Paul is pretty well known in this community but no-one has a problem with him self-submitting.

I'd love to see this happen in the Valley too. The amount of companies who have been bleeding the wrong people because of management politics is astounding. I'd love to see some of those people use their packages to bootstrap some startups.

Nobody else will promote you until you promote yourself. If other people on HN don't read your blog or use your product you won't ever make it on here unless you kick start it yourself. Once other people are aware of what you are doing, you

A paper model is a good first step because the materials are cheap and easy to work with. Modeling clay, etc are good second steps. For a first timer CAD modeling is a lot of investment, but it's definitely where you want to be. You can buy

People just don't want to maintain 2 sites. Extra features and sections often don't get updated to the text only rendering. I guess my point is that screen readers like (even prefer) well written markup. A text-only site is a kickback from

Oh and I'd also really recommend Tony Robbin's talk. I've seen him live and this is a real snap-shot of that http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/tony_robbins_asks_why_we_... I think his approach is really interesting and think he has a gen

I would definitely say Jonathan Harris talking about wefeelfine.org http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/jonathan_harris_tells_the... It's a fascinating data-mining project as well as something that looks at how technology can affect people

I'm going to disagree. Let me share some background, I spent several years helping to write the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 spec. The original WCAG 1.0 as well as Section 508 specify an alternate text only site as a viable meth

In summary: don't use stuff you don't trust (in this case the cloud) and don't trust stuff you do trust so much you don't have a plan B (e.g. backup your data yourself).

My eye doctor also recommended the 20-20-20 rule Good call! I'd recommend AntiRSI.app ( http://tech.inhelsinki.nl/antirsi/ ) too remind you to do this. It has breaks and micro-breaks. Micro breaks are for your eyes, breaks are for the res

Google seem to be trying hard not to become seen as a "tired" brand like many of those they supplanted. Mixing it up a bit is probably good for this.

I think it's important also to note that the article's author highlights one of the primary issues being "dueling knols" where instead of collaborating (as in a wiki) knol authors compete for the primary knol on a subject.

A number of companies have shut down web drive projects in the recent past such as AOL's Xdrive. I guess I'd be surprised with Google's move to "focus" their efforts if they released something like this.
