I wondered about this. It was discussed about how Pre sends a location update with its debug bundle. I wondered why Apple didn't send a location update when they pole for the push update. It wouldn't have to happen every time, but once ever

I do something like this with http://github.com/tylerhall/sosumi I was planning to write something which alternates between Sosumi and Clarke (Skyhook FireEagle updater for Mac) so when you are at your computer and updating you don't eat

I think the can of worms is that Backblaze themselves compared their system to more general solutions. While they were doing that for their own purpose they weren't so explicit with that point that many people (such as GigaOM, etc) took it

Interesting idea to get some press. Although, I believe technically Cockneys wouldn't use both parts of the rhyming slang. For example "Sky Rocket" (pocket) would be "Sky". The point being that it's impossible to guess the rhyming associati

Having actually helped to write some standards (W3C, BSI, etc) I can say this is occasionally true, but mostly false, in my experience. It's a cute cliche, but I think there are other issues behind the apparent grinding pace of standards, p

I met these guys in Michigan before they moved. Lots of promise, I think this is going to be really interesting. I really hope they will get to a place to take LivePerson on.

I have to recommend the http://progit.org book, because Scott did an amazing job of explaining it step by step in a clear and concise way. It's also free online, which is an obvious bonus.

To repost the comment I made on the article: I think this is an unfair comparison and Cory is oversimplifying. For example: "Rather than buying a hard-drive once and paying nothing – apart from the electricity bill – to run it, you can buy

You should really read Isaac's comments on the blog: http://blog.greenfelt.net/2009/09/01/caching-javascript-safe... They are really insightful and expose the knowledge gained from a lot of work he's done at Yahoo! on this subject.

As the article points out Macheist are about marketing, and they seem to be very good at it. If the tweet strategy becomes ineffective by putting off more people than it draws then I'm sure they will discontinue it. I'd be gobsmacked if the

I love the concept, but watching the example videos I kinda wish they'd implemented a transition in there. Some of videos were really jarring moving from "interesting" to "interesting" states. A small audio/visual fade out and then in again

Quite a few companies have one. Yahoo! has one too ( http://companystore.yahoo.com/ ). I'm always amazed at the amount of people that stop in front of the Yahoo! sign to take photos.

That's a good point. CCTV may act as a deterrent. It make me wonder if crime moves somewhere without CCTV (in which case we'd need a 100% coverage to win, not a good proposition). Or, perhaps, it's not a zero-sum game. If many criminals are

One of the smart guys in our (Y!) cloud team just point out something to me that hadn't occurred to me. This system is definitely optimized for backup. That totally make sense for Backblaze. However it's important to not compare this like f

I'd love to hear what they are doing to monitor their system. They didn't mention that. 3 out of 15 drives failures to loose a volume seems quite likely at that scale. I'd like to know what levels of warnings and alarms they use with which

I think that depends how transparent you are on your business practices. Running anything on a single server is dumb, but if you are one man shop running on EC2 and you are clear about that I don't think it's a big deal. Explain what you do

As frivolous as this seems, I think it's actually a really good idea. Google do this in a bunch of places. However unlike the MS flight simulator they are discoverable with use. The reason why this is important is it both delights the custo
