When did you realize that? Was it a slow change, or was there an epiphany? And was it a company-wide realization, or was there a champion behind it?

This is exactly what I was thinking. It seems crazy to roll this out instead of parse until there's a very clear reason why - and it's actually going to be more fun to use parse anyway since you get away from this kind of stuff. On top of t

The market they're going at seemed initially insane - how do you get your head around all the chaos that is ride sharing? But this is clearly a team that loved the idea and can execute beautifully. The hard out-of-the-comfort-zone work that

Why not use something like Sauce Labs? I built a screenshotting service on top of them using soda ( https://github.com/learnboost/soda ) a long time ago, and the code's bit-rotted by now, but it was quick and easy, and combined with firefox

It's really cool to see such a small team keep pumping out such sleek products. Really shows that it's about the quality of ideas/hackers that matters, not the size of the team. Congrats guys!

Still, I agree with hugs. Providing the web frontend as a way to connect to freenode might be a good gateway drug to get people using grove, and then have a simple, 'want to have your own private chat? Click here!' or something along those

The goal is laudable, but there's such a small chance of success in startups that selecting for anything other than likelihood to succeed is a dangerous strategy. Is that likelihood to succeed correlated to gender? Possibly, but not so li

There's a line here - I think the interview should cover a lot of bases, but by no means should a hire be a concrete thing. The first two weeks should be an intensive, fully-paid interview/trial-by-fire. I suppose, I just don't see why a sh

This sounds like a great technique. It also gives both sides the chance to talk a problem through, bounce ideas off of one another, and see if there are any interesting insights to be had on the other side of the table. A candidate and inte

Yeah, it's a positive signal that someone was able to pick up from past failed interviews. It's a weak filter, but it's fine to have. From there, it's best to work with the person on short projects, and then hire them as a contractor to fin

Nope, it's true. I woke up early in the morning (easy to do sleeping on the kitchen floor in mountain view without a heater), went through craigslist every morning, had an email template I'd individualize for each posting, and send it out.

Yeah, that was more or less the point of the post. For applicants, don't feel nervous, it's a silly game just to see if you know some of the puzzles. For people hiring, go ahead and use this as a first-pass filter, but realize that it's eas

Yup, it's a really nice natural filter. If the companies don't feel comfortable doing themselves what they've asked you to do, you should probably duck out of there with a polite declination as quickly as possible.

There's actually a really interesting article/email I read a long time ago saying that emacs main competitor was the browser, and that it was likely to be overtaken by it unless emacs reacted in some way. I can't find the article with a cur

I was aghast when I read that the Square COO didn't see much value in NFC ( http://gigaom.com/2011/09/26/square-mobilize-2011/ ). After spending a lot of time in Seoul where it's possible to pay for a ton of stuff via T-money card (a clippe
