If you're looking for a service similar to Snapjoy, you could give Sharypic a try: http://sharypic.com It's based around events, but you can use its galleries for anything. As an added bonus, it can also aggregate photos from twitter if y

I wouldn't much care about my Facebook statuses somehow being used as advertising, or even my tweets for that matter. They're just things I've said publicly and social networks have trained me not to expect any control over them anymore. On

I'm starting to realize that Instagram is not the service I thought it was. I initially thought it was Flickr with social features, but more and more it's turning into Facebook with photos. There is zero content discoveries features, so you

This is a great article, and definitely something I could recommend to a lot of people. But what about passion? Identifying a market is one thing, but should you go after it if you don't have any interest for that particular domain? I know

May I suggest my friend Tim's blog? I'm pretty sure it's unknown, it seems he writes it mostly for himself. But there are some great technical articles on it: http://www.pixelastic.com/

I thought the original concept was a satire of VCs and incubators meant to point out that you don't need a lot of cash to build a startup, you just need drive and hard work. But now, it seems everybody's taking it seriously? For example, th

It's crazy to think of all the energy that went into building great services like Napster, Audiogalaxy, and Soulseek, only to see them shut down by lawsuits. If record companies had put their efforts into turning just one of these services

Umm, all the fancy 3D in the world won't really help me if my maps app can't tell me how to get from point A to point B. This is not a case of "it doesn't work perfectly", it's a case of "it doesn't work at all " (for my use case, at least

It's really hard to find good web app design resources, and Nathan has really come out with great material. And great landing page by the way, there's a lot you can learn from that alone!

Not what I expected from the link-baity HN post title, that post does not actually tell us what he learned at all, if anything. Not complaining about the post itself, just thought it'd be very cool to have an actual "what I learned building

Thanks for the mention! My goal for Sidebar is actually to have it become the "HN of Design". I'm starting small, but I hope to get there eventually!

Maybe one difference is that libraries don't operate for profit, while pirate sites display ads and (as far as I know) don't redistribute any profits to the content creators? Although I would gladly pay $X/month to TPB if it did give some o

If anybody wants an easy way to set up their own HN, may I suggest taking a look at Telescope? http://telesc.pe/ It's a real-time, open source HN clone built on Meteor, with features like invite-only mode, notifications, and a lot more st

This is really awesome, definitely a good entrant in the "video games are art" category. I do wish it wasn't Flash though. Not that I have anything against Flash itself when used the right way, but I feel like it's really hard to "own" a Fl

That bug has been happening with older versions of Chrome. I know that's not an excuse, but you probably want to look into updating if that's what's happening.

Look at it another way: what's the utility of not seeing the stories change in real time? What added benefit does pressing the refresh button give you? If you're worried stories would change too fast, that's something that can be tweaked

That's actually part of the Meteor Auth package, it comes with a default design. I didn't bother styling it too much for now because Telescope will probably use its own Auth UI eventually.

I think Meteor is especially relevant for designers because it's pure Javascript. This makes it the perfect framework for designers and front-end engineers that want to build an app but don't know Ruby, Python, or PHP.
