What has become of my beloved HN? Doesn't a devout 20 minutes three times a day on HN count as meditation. Next we'll be discussing horoscopes...

Doesn't work for me Chrome 9.0.597.98 beta on Ubuntu :( Possibly because all HTTP traffic has to go through a proxy server, the company block all outbound traffic, and require a proxy server.

Thanks, that's essentially what I said, but I am curious what you mean by "most followings in common" (you mean people intersect?) I assumed you did some form of semantic analysis of the tweet streams to intersect based on common RT's or li

I'd love to hear the concepts behind this, I'm guessing you first do a radial search from current location, yield list twitter handles, fetch last n dozen tweets, extract links, cluster, intersect, introduce. I don't have a 4[] account to t

Simplistic means treating complex issues and problems as if they were much simpler, that's exactly what Jquery and its suit of plugins (including Amplify) does well.

The internet is really many superimposed communities. Expecting the internet, or pretty much anything else to be a certain way is setting yourself up for unfulfilled expectation. The internet is a rapidly changing place and filled with enor

"Nothing kills a new idea better than taking too much time on it." I feel like this might be true of very simplistic ideas, I don't think it holds in any generally applicable form. Some ideas take time to fully germinate and flourish. Imagi

C++ with a JIT is called Java, Seriously though this is misguided. PGO is clearly a step in the right direction but its simply deferred static optimization. Either you optimize in C at the compile time, or with PGO by running a few statisti

It's fascinating watching the HN community ebb and flow around topics, there's this collective conscious that discusses programming languages (mostly) and some days the tide takes us to a heavily Pythonic view of the world, and this week we

This is not true. The runtime environment for Java is capable of changing the program on the fly in response to dynamically determined bottlenecks. To implement such a system in C would be to re-implement Java. What you cannot do in C/C++ t

I was curious about the Redis sets used for social graph storage and using intersection of sets to find nodes in common. Would anyone have an idea about the complexity of this as both the number of nodes in the graph and the number of edges

No they are not! apps mostly use the internet for their data, but provide a richer UX than what a web browser can do. The internet is the underpinning of most apps.
