It's the pop culture mentality which is now worse than ever: [2004] http://queue.acm.org/detail.cfm?id=1039523 "So I think the lack of a real computer science today, and the lack of real software engineering today

Since you have such valuable insights, perhaps you should discuss them on openbsd-tech.

So, apart from GitHub, we now have another opportunity for coding slaves to prove themselves worthy. Spartacus, open your mouth, I want to see your teeth.

The opposite of too regular is not necessarily "abuse of the C++ preprocessor" or unwarranted cleverness. The same phenomenon exists in natural languages: The sentence structure in some passages of the bible is just too regular

I'm still trying to force myself to like Go. The basic problem is that Go is too regular for me, which makes it painful to read other people's code. I don't have this problem with functional languages or C written in a free

How are errors in deferred functions handled? How about division by zero?

No, I never thought that. I was extrapolating what might happen when an (almost) monopolist like GitHub would start to mine, analyze, and sell data like Facebook.

A further step towards the gamification of Open Source development. On the other hand, maybe that's Github's future business model: Rank Open Source slaves and sell that information to recruiters.

Could you stop downvoting michaelochurch all the time? Several responses who agree with him are in the plus, this comment is <= -2. It's ridiculous.

That is what the Go developers claim. I don't see this abuse very often in C, either. If a speed sensitive function in C is documented to work for integers in the range 0 < x < 256, then it makes sense to put in an assert() as a

This is utterly ridiculous. West Germany was FAR better off economically when the D-Mark was strong.

Fine, I assume he'll apologize for the treatment of Ben Noordhuis then. EDIT: And the ministry of truth voting is on the side of some rich silicon valley guys again.

In a naive world it's called community. These days open source is a vehicle for multinationals to get suckers to write and test their software for free. Microsoft has caught on to that, hence the move.

No professional opinion is needed: The copyright warnings at the beginning of DVDs often state that it is forbidden to perform the work in "restaurants, prisons, ..." (sometimes they even mention oil rigs).

Interesting that the git hipsters are downvoting factually correct information. "Unruly hackers" (pg) seem to be perfect fodder for groupthink and monopolies.

I disagree. GitHub looks cluttered and the contrast is too low for speed reading. I prefer the hg interface, for example: https://hg.python.org/cpython/ Another interface I prefer is: http://cvsweb.openbsd.o

The proper analogy is this: There is a city where a road service provider (RSP) builds and maintains all roads. At strategic places, there are road checkpoints where the RSP can block traffic. Recently, there has been a series of bank robbe

Overloading productive open source devs with spam and administrative bullshit is parasitic. (Allegedly) collecting money after a project has told them to stop is parasitic at best.

If open source parasites like tip4commit don't learn, the next logical step is to trademark projects and send DMCA notices without wasting any further time. Also, with this kind of sleazy behavior, the advertising clause in the BSD lic
