Canonical tried and failed many times to be the driver behind improvements to Linux and the Linux desktop. They want control and influence across the stack, but so far their biggest bets have mostly been failures. They pushed Upstart. It fe

100% agree. Not having those menu buttons visible until you focus means an extra click (and you can't even see what the menu headings are for that app until you click, so it also delays your thought process). Ok so you get more screen

@boochiboo12 Looks like a really interesting device! I have one question about one of the taglines on the home page "A distraction free space". What are the things inherent to the OS that make it distraction free? Is it Android wi

I agree that psychology applies to the CEO. I agree that any financial decisions they make must involve psychology. But you are applying the concept of mindset in a way that goes beyond its definition. Let's say there are two gardeners

This is a misunderstanding of fixed and growth mindset, which is to do with personal and educational psychology. It isn't related to operational growth. Cost management and planning are orthogonal to fixed/growth mindset. Cutting

I wonder how Kitty would do on these benchmarks. Kitty is a different beast to Alacritty and has tonnes of features (many of which I'm grateful for), but I wonder what the performance cost is.

So you're saying that if projects continue choosing to sunset without handing over the keys to the kingdom, open source will stop existing? This is simply not even close to true. Edit: I can't reply to your reply, so here will do.

For people outside USA/California, PG&E serves gas and electricity to two thirds of California. They're featured in the film Erin Brockovitch for knowingly dumping 1400 million litres of hexavalent chromium contaminated water

I'm wondering whether this story has been manually downranked. Posted only 3 hours ago and 800+ votes but it's suddenly dropped from top 3 (on page 1) to 38th (on page 2). Is it worth noting that Netlify bought two Y Combinator st

Worth noting that there are only two active "core" devs, Maxim Dounin (the OP) and Roman Arutyunyan. Maxim is the biggest contributor that is still active. Maxim and Roman account for basically 99% of current development. So thi

Looks like a failed/abandoned project. The user that opened the PR (only 6 months ago) to add uptimesniper to the list has since deleted their GitHub account, and the uptimesniper website and twitter are gone. I guess someone sniped it

This is not open source(!). Edit: There's no obvious mention of open source on their website or docs (presumably because that would be legally unwise), so it's false advertising on HN for likes. Relevant GitHub issue: https:/

Heh oh my bad, I didn't realise you have the privilege of gatekeeping what "minimal" means ;) I see one dictionary definition is "the least possible". Seems like the least possible prompt is no prompt at all, but it

I think you're missing my point. The OP was a positive story. There could be an interesting discussion to be had around the subject of useful things to remember. But you literally used the words "tedious" and "stupid&quo

A parent is sharing their joy(!) of using Anki to help their child develop curiosity, feel a sense of accomplishment, and learn about the world. And your response at someone else's joy is to swat it down and call it tedious and stupid?

I can see arguments for both sides. Personally, I find the extra blank line to be a useful visual separator between lines of output. Particularly useful when running commands with lots of output or 'cat'-ing files or logs.

If I have to choose between hacking together a bunch of shell scripts to do my deduplicated, end-to-end encrypted backups, vs using a popular open source well-tested off the shelf solution, I know which one I'm picking!

The USA makes up only about 8-10% (250M) of total Facebook users (3B) based on a quick search I just did. They're not even the largest user base by country, which is apparently India.
