Norvig's classic _Teach Yourself Programming in Ten Years_ still holds up well here. http://www.norvig.com/21-days.html Learning to program can be a smooth path, but it's also a long one.

Good choice to use Platypus! I've collaborated with its author in the past and I have a lot of respect for him. In general, I'm really glad you're talking about modern MOEAs. There's far too much material on the intern

You'll find there are also plenty of people on here who like Forth, and even a few Fortran partisans. There are lots of ways to gratify your curiosity.

Fortunately, this blog seems to get a fair amount of love from HN. That's how I discovered it and became a regular reader. It makes lots of points that seem like they would be common sense, except that they are directly opposite the

My personal relationship with linked lists has had its highs and lows. When I was teaching myself C as a teenager, the linked list was the first pointer-based data structure I implemented myself, and the cause of so very many segfaults. I

This is one of those positions that's so obvious, I struggle to articulate what the contrary position would even be. And yet, my community continues to squeeze out its trailer parks, even though I live in an area with plenty of land.

My local newspaper. It's not great, but it's all we've got. It buys wire service articles, so we're paying for the wire services indirectly too.

I don't see that as a waste of time at all. The programmer learned a lot and didn't damage the codebase, assuming the changes went unmerged. This sounds like a pretty good way to come to grips with the problem domain.

No, I think that would be a lazy and unjustified criticism. My remarks shouldn't be taken as criticism at all. In the same way that a calculus textbook has the student work carefully constructed math problems, HTDP has the student wo

This is a book that embodies its thesis, that learning to design programs is like learning how to write or do mathematics. In the same way that academic treatments of writing or math abstract out the things you might actually do with writi

Inhaling products of combustion is a bad idea and we should do as little of it as we can. If we're going to burn stuff, let's do it at power plants with centralized monitoring and mitigation, so that we can all avoid breathing ex

Every now and then (like right now) I visit today's HN, but usually I like to follow it 48-72 hours behind (using the _past_ link). After a couple of days, the dust has settled, and you don't have to check back to see how a conve

His appearance at this event must have been just about peak ESR. I've been following his long slow slide into crank-dom on his blog, at least up until its stop last fall. I wonder what he's up to now.

That's amazing. I want that. I like how clear it is about what it's for, which is the sort of thing one does all the time in other languages that lack a vocabulary for it. I'm going to assume you could put any predicate you

I have a slow-moving side project in Racket. I picked it up for its reputation for being the Python of the Scheme world, but I think the analogy doesn't hold up and you're better off accepting Racket on its own terms. Racket doe
