From the US (where we have problems of our own, believe me), the UK, and especially England, look like a powerful case for federalism. As far as I can tell, the entire country is run by and for rich Londoners, with no countervailing local p

Notebook looks good, much less expensive than Rhodia or Yu-Sari for 300 sheets of A5, assuming paper quality is as advertised. Priced in dollars although I’m not sure if they actually ship to to the us.

Sounds accidental, but might be interesting to be able to see the workpiece as if stationary, while it’s turning at 1800rpm. Everything looks smooth under ordinary lighting.

> you have to put a lot of work in to learn how to get good results out of these systems That certainly punctures the hype. What are LLMs good for, if the best you can hope for is to spend years learning to prompt it for unreliable resul

> Jupyter Notebooks Well said. My favorite is the notebook that can only get into the state of interest by executing the cells out of order, and skipping the ones with syntax errors. Jupyter is fine for messing around with data, but savi

What I missed here was the importance of keeping careful notes as you go. What exactly happened when we constructed that weird input and commented out line 353? What hypotheses are we entertaining? Can we rule out any of them based on our

Are there people with those skills today? They seem to be in terribly short supply. I’ve seen more than one company spin its wheels for ages because nobody could clearly express an operational vision.

I’m not clear on how this solves the problem. Counterfeits can be hard to detect. Counterfeit food, toiletries, and electronics can poison you or start a fire. And my redress is a generous return policy?

Considering how hard it is to avoid dodgy counterfeit merchandise in certain product categories, that seems like an apt description.

My house, not too far from Three Mile Island, was built between its commissioning and the incident with reactor 2. As a result, its builders installed the most insane heating system known to man: resistive heating in the ceiling. Crank it a

Markdown is an attempt to codify formatting conventions that were already long in use for newsgroups and email. It’s meant to be human readable first and only incidentally convertible to actual markup. If semantics are a mess and nobody can

This is a huge selling point, and it will really differentiate the orgs that adopt it from those who don’t. Eventually the whole organization will become as inscrutable as the agents that operate it. From the executive point of view this is

I started using sway seven years ago, and even then I had very few issues. Granted I use integrated Intel graphics and I mostly just want to arrange terminal emulators, but still, on that happy path, it hasn’t been a problem.

You’ve been able to run an x server within sway from very early days, it’s just not managing windows any more. X11 forwarding over ssh still works.

Very language dependent. Long build times mean you may need a debugger. Debugging prints make you think harder in advance and can actually force you to structure your code with greater clarity. The fact that you have to understand what they

Current grad students sometimes ask why I never publish. Mostly laziness, to be sure. But also, if I’m going to spend months polishing up a paper, why on earth would I subject it to the academic publishing fiasco when I’m not an academic?
