This feels like "old HP" aka "good HP" back when they were at the forefront of innovation. Basically before they bought Compaq and sold off Agilent and when they produced calculators that weren't made of poop.

I think you need to ask the end users their opinion of this. This is a common failure mode in corporations of that size. It's really not efficient throwing everything away every 3-5 years. 10 years is minimum cycle IMHO, possibly longe

This is not new. ExtJS existed a decade ago. But the performance was so bad that we threw it out of the window at evaluation time and wrote our own very light weight augmented view components which provided exactly this class of functionali

Yes I exclude instruments and transducers. Those are where the investment should be if anything. You have no idea what you are talking about regarding signal chain. Discrete opamps are inferior on every possible measurement. This is total n

I use a GWT based application regularly which Smartclient appears to be. No thanks. As for testing with selenium it's more the point that the entire thing is stateful so the user journeys are much more difficult to program which leads

It's still there, being used and is popular. However no one sells training, fads, marketing, conferences, buyouts, ideologies or frameworks based around it though so there's not a lot of fanfare.

This article is self-defeating based on its own content and the experience I have developed over the last 20 years. I beg the author to deal with a typical real world application. Not low scope startup stuff but the thousands of 500+ endpoi

Yes but the point is the signal path in those probably less than $100 end to end. Instruments excepted. A decent audio grade opamp is $2 for example.

That’s not how software teams work unfortunately. There’s probably three build systems and none of them work on certain days of the week and the guy who wrote it all left six months ago.

I know the shipping rates system. It’s the entire supply chain that gets me. How do they do that for £1.50 when I can’t get the parts for less than £15 here in huge volumes.

I’ve heard such things. Two points to note: 1. Decent monitor headphones or speakers sound the same. That’s under $500. Even some Sennheiser HD25’s are literally up there. 2. The equipment used to record such music cost less and was lower q

I wasn't a fan of magsafe. I'd rather have a machine that doesn't die if you look at it funny apart from the narrow case of falling over the cable. (I have killed three macbooks) Not only that I've seen a magsafe connect

Nice to see the Rotring ArtPen in there. This has been my choice of pen for the last 20 years or so. They’re relatively cheap, last a very long time and you don’t cry when you break or lose them like an expensive fountain pen.

I never understood that mentality. Not once have I had an insurmountable problem with any Linux platform. The same is not true with Microsoft, Oracle and IBM from experience, even with paid up top tier support. Even 60,000 employee defence

Judging by IBM’s history over the last 20 years I suspect this is akin to putting Satan at the wheel and giving him a bottle of Jack Daniels. Several layers of abstraction down the line I get the feeling this will hurt us ansible and centos

OpenBSD is one of those things you could be stranded on a desert island with the base system and still be productive with just that and the manpages.

I’m not sure that is the case. I know a lot of Perl developers who jumped ship. Including me. While I respect that Perl development is still going, I haven’t seen it used by anyone in production for at least 15 years.

Actually it’s more RTFM before you drive the car. A powerful skill many have forgotten which is supplanted by autonomous tools to make tripping over claymores easier.
