The point though is that there used to be a «Linux desktop» you could target before the Wayland transition. Fragmentation of an already small market segment is unfortunate.

I think also a lot of my objections could be worked around if one simply had a "math" macro that evaluates infix math notation as a DSL, similarly to how the CL "loop" macro does a DSL for iteration. Perhaps this exists

I definitely prefer s-exps over both xml and json myself too! Interesting question. Much of the difficulty does stem from mentally translating back and forth between conventional notation and s-exps too, since you can’t really avoid the sta

I’d like a dialog where you are simply asked to repeat a sentence like «yes, record my screen» or «yes, record what I type» into a text field to approve. Straightforward but still makes you think.

The argument for Pandoc is that (last I checked) Typst doesn’t compile to e.g. HTML, EPUB, or DOCX. So if you’re writing something that should be available in multiple formats, it might still make sense to type it in e.g. Markdown and then

Presumably a CLI-accessible password manager (like `pass`) or a GPG-encrypted file (like a netrc-style `~/.authinfo.gpg`).

I certainly disagree with the GP attitude, but also with your counter-example. America is de facto run by the descendants of colonizers. How much control do Native Americans really have over its governance?

Even for ASCII chars, nomenclature in math and physics is usually case-sensitive.

All of the things you mention can also be done as a PostDoc. Which might be even better for social networking, broadening your research portfolio, etc. than staying in a single PhD position for the duration of a PhD + PostDoc.

As an associate professor, I do explain things the first day, but I am certainly not permitted to fail students as a consequence of not checking their email daily. Even if they didn’t hand in an assignment at all, without any reason provide

Just to add one more data point, we also use Canvas at my university. The deadline for submitting who are eligible (i.e. passed compulsory assignments and labs) to take the exam was yesterday, and I couldn’t meet that deadline because Canva

I had a similar moment a few years ago. That Google Maps pop-up was what caused me to first switch to de-googled Android, and once that turned out to be a hassle after a couple of years, switch to an iPhone without Google stuff. (On Android
