It’s worth noting that Vim has a lot of these *prg settings you can customize per file type: makeprg, formatprg, equalprg, etc.

Makes sense – thanks for the explanation and for ripgrep. Personally, I love this default and find it way more usable than grep in most cases. It’s a more important feature to me than the per-file search speed, since grep is often fast enou

rg, fd, etc. all use not only .gitignore, but also merge in rules from a global gitignore in your home directory, as well as a local .ignore file that takes precedence over .gitignore. Setting up all that with CLI flags is a lot of work for

I don’t know which field you work in, but I do research in physics and chemistry and L is the dominant convention in the papers I read. I also teach intro physics at the university level and the textbook uses L. In high school (~2008) we we

Note: The official SI unit “liter” was written “l” until a couple of decades ago, when they changed it to “L” due to frequent legibility issues (l/I/1). Some old texts use the old convention.

Perhaps the best of both worlds would just be to write a warning to stderr by default that files in .gitignore have been ignored (only if such a file is applied)?

Note that ePub is basically just a zipped HTML file, and has become quite common for ebooks. I don’t know how that might be for archiving purposes? I generally stick to PDF myself, but I do sometimes wish it would be more ergonomic to reflo

Interesting idea. I guess one alternative approach would be to defadvice “howm-create” to prompt for a major mode, e.g. by let-binding the “howm-template” variable to contain “- - mode: … - -“ on top and prompt the user for a mode?

Howm is a minor mode, and can be used with any text format that Emacs supports. Whether it’s useful to combine them is another question, I guess it depends on whether you use TeXinfo for notes or documents? I thought TeXinfo is mostly use

I feel that it’s a different type of simplicity: Denote is simple and well-designed, but I personally found it a hassle to actually organize things in it. For instance, to actually find again my content when I need it, I find that it’s imp

That is indeed the principle around which Howm is designed. To quote its author: > If you don’t organize notes, it’s wearisome to read them. > If you try to organize notes, it’s wearisome to write them. > The need of trade-off is
