The title is a paraphrase of sentiments expressed in the linked article and attributed to some unnamed venture capitalists. Not sure I agree with the assessment, but I do see that, as Michael Arrington said, it holds a "kernel of truth". Wh

This does seem to be the type of site I asked about in the OP. I'm curious to see how well it does when it launches.

This is interesting, since I've been thinking for a while that your Netflix queue might serve as a decent proxy in tests about whom you might click with (either romantically or just-friends). If I think of the things my friends and I have i

I'm not sure focusing solely on interests is the way to go because, if I think of the people I consider my best friends, what amazes me is that we don't really share that many common interests or hobbies. What bonds us seems to be that when

Interesting stuff, but you mention under-21s. I think this age group never has that much trouble meeting friends, since they are still in school, see a lot of people, maybe are less picky than older people in who they interact with, etc. So

Do you think that if a dentist comes up with an idea for a more efficient internal combustion engine, or comes up with the idea for intermittent windshield wipers, that the effort to validate or implement those two ideas is the same? Valida

I think this is almost by definition the case, since if you are not working in some field, the way you get an idea for an improvement for that field is by being a user of a product of that field (e.g. by driving a car), and therefore you la

I need to clarify the OP, since it seems many are responding to points I wasn't making. Basically, like many of you, I have some ideas for things outside my field. I can see that, if pursued by someone in that field , they have an epsilon

I never claimed there was no physical component to addictions or that withdrawal symptoms can't be very bad. It's just that it is possible to end all existing addictions (alcohol, drugs, Facebook, etc) and still live, but no one can end t

The analogy to breathing is a bad one, because breathing air is not an addiction, it is a physical need. If you stop breathing, you die. If you stop reading HN or Reddit or Facebook, you don't die. So, saying that an addiction is about thin

One problem that people who work with computers for a living have versus people who don't, is that, if you are an internet addict and you are, e.g. a nurse, you can always just avoid computers altogether for, say a week or a month, if your

The web site looks nice, though I would have liked a few more screenshots. The app looks like it would be useful, though it all depends on how many businesses you get to partner with. (Since it's only for San Diego, I haven't actually downl

I guess C++ hate is in fashion, but for me, I just don't see it. I've programmed in myriad languages, including the HN-beloved Lisp, and I think C++ is fine and stands up there with the best of them in terms of ability, syntax, etc. It has

Yes, that's the norm when everyone gets an entree that is roughly the same price (give or take a few dollars, where the amount depends on the group, e.g. students vs professionals). However, when some people in the group order something ext

Yes, with the promo code it's free. To enter the promo code, you go to the iTunes Store home page (in iTunes), and in the top-right corner, click on "Redeem", and in the page that opens, paste the promo code. Let me know what you think!

Yes, but if it makes sense to stay in stealth mode for the reasons you outline, doesn't that mean that there is value in the knowledge of what you are working on, i.e. there is value in ideas?

Thanks for the info. I should have noted in my initial post that I come from a C++ background (have been using it for more than 10 years) and I do strongly prefer C++ syntax.
