The main site itself was very unlikely to be vulnerable, but support apps, internal apps, etc. are all vectors.

The timing of this hack, and the fact that Twitter was (at least at one point) a Rails app, and still uses Ruby on the front end, makes me think this is likely a YAML vulnerability exploit. Can anyone confirm/rule this out?

I know that's what you meant. Regarding male-only traits as prestigious implies that they are superior to female-only traits. That implication is sexism. Whether or not you think sexism is insulting -- and it appears you do not -- it was de

Complimenting a woman by saying she's like a man is pretty much the definition of sexism.

Shhh! Americans are blissfully unaware that everyone in Europe is legally entitled to 2-3x more vacation than Americans get. 25 days of vacation is the biggest thing I miss about working in London :-p

"Unlimited vacation" translates to "no vacation". What does "as long as you're getting your work done" mean? There's no point in the year when nobody would be happier if you got something done sooner. There's never a time when taking vacati

Immigration rights are not tax breaks, and they are a hugely valuable benefit of marriage. Marriage gets you a green card within two years; attempting to do the same as, say, a 25 year old with a bachelor's degree could take upwards of 7 ye

This has been repeatedly suggested, but given all the fuss from the religious right over giving others equal rights, the uproar that would be caused by attempting to take rights away from them would be enormous, and political suicide.

This was Mitt Romney's suggestion for gay marriage, but the truth is that there are all sorts of rights that can only be conferred by marriage. For example: you can't write a contract that says your business partner should pay less taxes, b

A number of people have recommended this to me; I'm talking to my immigration lawyers now about what happened and the best way to prevent it happening again, but this is a strong possibility.

I went to college in the UK. Before, during and after, I worked at a series of startups. I gained experience in PHP, MySQL, etc.. -- a slow but steady accumulation of skill. Then I got a job with Yahoo in the UK, who despite their (many!) f

One of those incentives could be if US citizens decided to complain about the immigration system -- the point of the post is to attempt to marginally contribute towards that happening.

I wrote a long, long blog post about why: http://seldo.com/weblog/2012/11/29/why_all_americans_should_... But the TLDR is: immigration brings skilled workers into the country, who produce more than they consume, raising GDP. So stopping t

Amazon is currently reporting simultaneous issues in ELB, Cloudsearch, and Elastic Beanstalk. I suspect they use some common underlying service which is the root of the failure in all three, but I don't know what service that might be. (The
