This is why it makes more sense to run your own URL shortener, and make it discoverable using a pattern like rev:canonical: http://sites.google.com/a/snaplog.com/wiki/short_url

I believe the justification was so they could use unified cookies across all their properties -- they set the cookie for "com.com", and then it was available to news.com.com, search.com.com, downloads.com.com, etc., in the same way that yah

No need to build a new one every time; services like http://totally.awe.sm let you set up a URL shortener on any domain. (Disclaimer: the founder is a friend of mine) And before you say "it's trivial, I could build that in a weekend" I s

I really don't think this says anything about branding. It says people don't want shitty coffee, and that they recognize shitty coffee whether or not it has a Starbucks logo on it.

How to collaborate with a large team of others. We had group projects, sure, but they were small enough that usually one or sometimes two guys would do all the coding and everybody else would just fuck around. The stuff you have to learn to

I knew there must be a formula but I totally just broke out a spreadsheet and auto-generated the sequence and then auto-summed it. Math/brain fail.

I think the author's conclusion was that while being a fast typist doesn't make you a better programmer, being a slow typist will make you a worse one, as it will take you longer to commit your initial mistakes and iterate, akin to playin

There's really no smoking gun in the linked post. They highlight quotes that look damning out of context, but even just taking the surrounding sentence as context they seem a lot more innocent.

Of course, this really only shows the personality types of people on HN who answer polls . Still, that INTJ/INTP domination is kind of amazing.

I don't think any of his opinions expressed are actually a turnaround from his previous statements. He used to talk about the good things at Microsoft and not mention the bad things. Now he is talking about the good things at Google (with c

I agree completely. I noticed a while back that the order bar was a fake -- I especially love that it slows down and jerks around a bit for authenticity -- but what a great way to stave off hundreds of customer calls saying "I didn't get th

I use Eclipse for all my editing. My deployment method is to commit to svn, then svn update on the server (plus a script to move the current live site to a backup location in case I need to roll back). This is faster than FTP and means I've

This article is so stupid it makes me angry. What's is Mr. Carr's point? That people who report the news are sometimes doing it for the sake of their own aggrandizement rather than pure altruism? Then why is there a byline link on your post

Yes, all the recent user research we've done (I work at Yahoo) says that users have got a lot more comfortable with scrolling since Nielsen's original research in the 90s. We officially Do Not Care About The Fold now. Anecdotally, for some

Agreed. When I read the headline I nearly creamed my jeans: finally! A scalable database in the cloud! Bring it! But no, it's just MySQL in the cloud. That's great and all, but it's not going to solve the scalability problems of MySQL. Does
