Quite. The point is not that plastic is bad, it's that plastic as supplied by Visa and Mastercard is a monopolistic rip-off of consumers and merchants by those two companies and the banks.

Could people who are building big new projects in perl today please chime in? I would like to know what motivated your choice of language. I haven't seen anything new and interesting built in Perl in upwards of five years, but I'll be first

I really don't think that's true. The "average" MySQL user has never heard of Monty -- I used MySQL for more than a decade before I heard the name of its inventor. MySQL's battle for the last decade has mostly been getting enough brand reco

The science museum in London has a really beautiful stainless-steel model of a combination lock similar to his wooden one. The first time I played with it and saw the bar fall into the slots was one of those wonderful "holy cow!" moments wh

Another useful tool along these lines is http://domai.nr/ , which searches all the available TLDs, not just the big 5. However, it expects you to have a full word in mind rather than suggesting things.

This implies there is currently some functioning central government, which is mostly a polite fiction. One of Afghanistan's fiefdoms is centered on Kabul, and we pretend that one is the government.

Basically, this guy isn't a web developer. He's an ex-chef who has a degree in software engineering. There's no indication that he's even built a website. I really feel for him and his family, but it's not like this indicates a problem for

I think it would be helpful to summarize: "Western education forces lifelong Muslims to more thoroughly analyze their beliefs, which until that point they just accepted without questioning. They then go to one extreme or the other: either t

Who calls people? My iPhone is a wireless Internet device, which comes with a hugely inconvenient tax of 400 unused voice minutes every month. I cannot WAIT until somebody releases a good phone with a data-only plan (maybe the Nexus?)

As a Yahoo, I assure you this is in no way "as the Internet company searches for new ways to cut costs during the recession". We do this every year, as do other companies -- like Apple, I believe.
