I agree that freedom of speech is the overriding priority here, but at the same time I can't help but feel -- for instance, when watching 400 people attempt to login to Facebook via ReadWriteWeb's comment button -- that some kind of basic t

It has been a long time since I was involved in the W3C, but I can tell you that the public lists are plagued with clueless people who jump onto, e.g., the XHTML 2.0 standards definition list and ask for help with converting their BMPs into

Absolutely. Creating a better safety net WOULD really help innovation -- being terrified of not having health insurance is a huge barrier to joining startups for many people. And the current government has so far done nothing to help that,

Sure, but my point is that Yelp's core tech of storing venue information, ratings and reviews is not "hard" -- Google and Yahoo both have services that do this. But it beats the pants off of them because its user interface and social dynami

While there is definitely a bunch of talent on the team, I'd say this is definitely a technology acquisition, but specifically a UI acquisition -- Google could build the back-end to vark tomorrow, but the user interaction is something they

The idea that a software/firmware bug in the electronics that controls the gas pedal could kill me is deeply, deeply unsettling. If you put electronics into basic systems of a car like this, I want it to be like plane electronics: three of

A friend's startup used Rackspace Cloud for all of two weeks. It's a really strange product. It pretends to be a cloud service but it's really just Yet Another Shared Host, only more expensive. After their account got suspended without noti

So the IE6 comparison is definitely the right way to sting developers into action. Nobody wants to end up being That Guy from 2001 again. There's a few differences though. IE6 did a few things better (their box-sizing model is still more

It's really interesting to me that he even considers taking Moore's law into account when doing cost planning, but of course it makes sense. I also like this line: For a really quickly growing startup that's always doing something new, you

I am a major anti-fan of OpenID, but the idea is that these sites will not ask you for your Yahoo/Gmail password. Instead, they will bounce you to Yahoo/Google/whoever (where it's assumed you'll usually already be logged-in), which will a
