Glacier is about $1USD/TB/month just for storing data. If you need to retrieve it ends up being about $90USD/TB, most of that is bandwidth charges.

It can, if you set a disk as the hot spare for that pool. But a disk can only be a hot spare in one pool, so to have a "global" hot spare it has to be done manually. That may be what that poster was doing.

ZFS needs HBAs. Those get your disks connected but otherwise get out of the way of ZFS. But yes, hardware RAID controllers and ZFS don't go together.

You need an mDNS repeater. With that and the appropriate ports opened in the firewall I have cross VLAN casting working perfectly reliably. OpnSense is the firewall.

Unbound has a block list feature and there are several other options. None are quite to the same level as far as I know, but the rest of OpnSense makes up for it.

OpnSense has long been the better option. It forked from pfsense years ago and has been better for a long time. Netgate engaged in some shameful behavior after the fork, their mistreatment of Jason isn't their first instance.

Oddly, they don't seem to support or want the providers to be running VMs. That moves it out of "idle hardware" into "dedicated hardware" territory right there. I can dedicate a VM as I can restrict that VMs resourc

I disagree. My dumb detectors started false positives after just a few years. Their mute/silence buttons didn't work so burnt toast meant two minutes of screeching. No options for remote alerts (without external smart hardware). B

Nest Protects are still around and are amazing. So much better than the garbage Kiddes I had before (a working mute/silence button? What a concept!). The self tests and green Ok light at night are comfort boosters. And the voice announ

Why not some large pumps, suck up water from the canal and use jets to blast the sand out from under the bow. Slowly shift the sand around. Granted they might have to dredge to clear that sand out of the canal. Surely it's been thought

It looks like Aegis so I don't see what's been missing... Aegis does backups, biometrics and is open source.

Old hardware yes, newer generations are quite quiet when not under high load. But people buy old hardware and then find out the hard way...

It's object storage, you can use it for either. Especially with adding other tools on top like Duplicacy or Rclone.

FreeNAS uses ZFS. There isn't anthing traditional RAID about it. You can expand it but not by adding a single disk to a parity set (going from five drives to six), only by adding a set of disks (adding another set of five or a similar

The Paradox of Tolerance applies quite well here... The segment being squeezed out wasn't willing to debate. There's been a year of debate and tolerance about the merits of masks, science, conspiracy, etc. The segment being deplat

RAIDZ gives roughly the IOPS of one drive per VDEV. Mirrors is one drive of write IOPS per VDEV and some say two drives of IOPS for read. You went from 3 drives to 18, IOPS wise.

Agreed on the limping along. I survived a RAIDZ1 double drive failure exactly like that, one drive completely died and a second started acting up during the resilver. Resilver slowed way down but made it eventually. All those drives got rep

People act like resilvers on parity are vastly different than on mirrored. They are not, its just reads and writes, granted in a different pattern. My RAIDZ2 resilvers at about what I expect the old drives in it to write at, ~100MB/sec
