This reminds me of this saying: We, the unwilling Led by the unknowing Are doing the impossible For the ungrateful We have done so much For so long With so little We are now qualified To do anything With nothing

There is also a question of spending $44B to rebuild a company from scratch. Couldn’t Musk have spent under a billion to create a startup and effectively competed with Twitter ?

I have used an Indian online site [1] to order a really good pair of glasses. It cost me $150, but I found the quality to be much better than what I could get in the US. [1] https://www.titaneyeplus.com/

You must be me. I have a very strong technical team, and our work is foundational for the product. But it is harder to convey that impact in interviews, compared to saying you have a larger team and manage a large budget. I feel companies d

I switched to duckduckgo few years back, and most of my searches work. I still have to use g! once in a while. Web search is such an important function, I wish there was a community funded, Wikipedia like entity for search.

Wordstar, Dbase III Plus and Lotus 1-2-3, along with MS-DOS were my gateway to the computer world. I suspect this must be the case for a lot of kids growing up around that time.

I gave a prompt about a kid reading the Harry Potter book in the bed. It generated a kid wearing Harry Potter glasses reading a book. Pretty close, but also quite different from what I meant.

Agree. After seeing the trauma some of my friends went through, I do my bit to recommend against going to Stanford. The standard of care is poor, and the cost is exhorbitant.

I got this one: “Doctor Mike? My little dog moves slowly and won't eat dog food. Can you make an appointment for me?” The profile picture was the smiling face of an Asian girl. I didn’t bother to respond.

I have been a Netflix customer since the DVD-only days. My wife & me watch a show in the living room, while my son gets his weekend allowance to watch a cartoon in the bedroom. This used to work fine, until Netflix decided we can’t play

While we take chicken and eggs for granted, it is amazing to think that the pyramids pre-date that by a thousand years, and those ancient populations never tasted chicken !

In a way some of the FANGs are doing just that. Hire best talent, and get them all under one roof, and hope they would come out with breakthrough products.

A really good article. It was interesting to read this part: —- > A later study expanded on the same hypnotism vs. faking it question, this time using an MRI scanner, which gives more detail when looking at soft tissues. This time, the r

$4.2 trillion was the total stimulus spent. I find it hard to imagine the scale of this spending, with nothing to show for it. No new infrastructure was built, and we still seem to be staring at the beginning of a recession.

I wonder how much data collection happens in the name of COVID. My kids’ school wants mandatory weekly testing - the provider (who is not the hospital) wants all personal info. with generous terms that they own all the data. They also threw

I had signed up for Disney+ when they launched. I decided to cancel after few months. They had no option to cancel online. I had to spend an hour on hold before I could talk to someone and cancel. I decided I will never subscribe to Disney+

I wonder how much the moving of jobs outside has contributed to this. The few documentaries I saw had interviews with homeless, and the general theme was that they couldn’t land a job.

Yeah, I was hoping that the HN crowd would be pondering over the root cause for how we got here. There is a reason a lot of people are angry on both the sides, and the reasons mostly overlap.

I feel the real underlying issue is economic disparity. When breads and circuses stop, you will see riots. It gets worse when media has a hard time getting eye balls unless they can show outrage.

I highly recommend the Netflix documentary ’My Octopus Teacher‘. This is the story of a photographer diving everyday for a year, and developing a two way bond with an octopus.
