What about a service that lets you post to every barter site at the same time, not just craigslist. Has that been tried? If you could get people to use it (through better UI and more exposure for what they're selling) you could break crai

How about, "I find your wife/daughter/mother really attractive?" Bad things can happen if you tell people what you think. It's important to be precise when giving public social advice, because the people that could benefit from it the mos

Fair criticism. Maybe not, but I find the "what if foo was missing" arguments emotionally manipulative and so worth making fun of. It's like going up to someone in 1935 and saying, "What if there wasn't any metal ? Your life would totally

Hey foenix, have you actually seen the way American governments (state, federal, local) spend money? I think it's almost certain that every dollar you spend on your tutoring business helps people more than the marginal benefit of another do

I think a lot of people think the same way, which is why these location/social startups haven't caught on more. It seems like the big question is whether their problems are inherent or are actually just software problems. I can imagine a pr

Cool, thanks. It's actually a slightly different idea though, because (as far as I understand it) highlight doesn't signal your interests, it just shows who you're connected to. Maybe more like a class ring than actual clothing?

This is funny because I just had a long conversation with a friend about a startup idea. It would turn your smartphone into a beacon that broadcast your profile and your interests to the world, so that you could look around a coffeeshop or

Some of this has already been said by michaelf below, but you do realize that you're getting into the education market, right? I realize there have been elements of this even from the beginning of Y Combinator, but just because a change is

It's basically wrong for the same reasons not wearing a suit is wrong at a business meeting - it makes you stand out for something other than your accomplishments. A businessman's uniform is a suit, and a hacker's is a hoodie, and there's n

Here's a list of at least some of the companies that fought the patent: Google, Amazon, Adobe, CDW Corp, JCPenney, Staples and Yahoo. [1] Well done guys. Long live the fighters! [1] http://www.businessweek.com/news/2012-02-09/google-amazon

To address your first point about patents, I really think that would be a bad idea. Making the patent code more complicated just rewards the people who spend lots of effort on mastering its arcade rules and not making something people want.

You almost certainly know more about this than I do (I had to google FNSAX), but here's my issue with this strategy: You don't make money off stocks by investing in strong companies. You make/lose money by investing in companies that do bet

As someone who loves tricks and tactics it pains me to suggest this, but one sure way to replace Hollywood would be a frontal assault. Get a ton of money and make your own movies. You would definitely distribute them better than Hollywood,

Here's one argument for allowing corporate money in politics: Money can always find a way to affect power in a democracy. For this reason it's better to make the process straightforward and aboveboard than opaque and indirect.

Gotchya, so you're saying that the 'purposes and principles of the United Nations' is being used as a technical term referencing the rest of the document, and doesn't depend on what the organization of the UN wants at any specific moment.
