I was actually semi-serious, and thinking cameras and tear gas, not firearms. CONTINUED Basically a private protective service for people that don't have the money to afford live security guards.

How hard would it be to provide drone support to out of their depth pedestrians? That would be an interesting startup. ... Whoever does this please don't sell to Apple or FB.

Another good feature would be a summary of how SOPA currently stands, or a link to a website that has that information and keeps it current. I love HN, but it is NOT the place to get up to date political info. I believe at one point there w

It might be useful to be able to toggle a "Details of next election" overlay, bringing up info on how vulnerable each representative is in his or her next primary and general elections. This would allow people to focus attention on the few

I've heard this summarized as "Hollywood v. Silicon Valley" which seems pretty accurate. That makes this an intra-party fight among the Democrats, leaving Republicans free to jump in opportunistically on either side.

Hey ams6110, I'll take a shot at summarizing his argument because I find it interesting. Ender7 has claimed that a child's education shouldn't vary by his or her parents' wealth, but should be provided by society. Wnewman's point is basical

Ignore politics and start in the media and academia. Then pour decades of propaganda down on the issue and eventually your opponents will give way. This strategy takes a long time, but there's empirical evidence that it actually works.

Thanks for the link about the Overton window. It's a good reminder that there's a lot more going on here than meets the eye. I meant strategy to prevent it from passing. That seems like the thing to focus on at the moment. I'd like to find

Recruiting other people is always a good next step. Talking to friends is the simplest way to do it. I'd also posting about SOPA on FB/Twitter/etc. This article might be good to link to, though it's a little too long: The Definitive Post On

I'd like to make a point that applies to some (but by no means all) of the comments above. Outrage isn't a very useful emotion. It's become the default emotion for things like this because politicians like to keep people in a state of froth

Someone should make a short list of "best practices" for contacting your representatives. For instance, is there an easy way to set up a second google voice number so you don't end up getting called a million times during election season? A

Do it nicely of course, but basically that's what you should say. Play to your strengths. You don't own a company -- maybe you don't even own a suit -- so you play to a college student's strengths which are social media connections and spar

Don't get sucked into defeatism. The system is designed to be able to ignore the average person, sure, but here's the thing: you're not the average person. Be smart, be motivated, and figure out how things actually work. Then apply the maxi

You have to take an honest look at the world before you can optimize. A lot of our problems (in the US) come from trying to pretend we don't have social hierarchies, or problems with race, or whatever.

Being able to tag tags is great. My main concern is I don't see an easy way to export notes from folderboy. I've got a TON of notes to move over and I really don't want them stuck on one service (I have no idea if this is representative of

I'm definitely going to try out EverNote, but I'm note sure about the combination of tagging and notebooks. It seems like only one of those should be necessary.

You might not, and I might not, but some people will. Like a lot of things in modern society it's all about the margins. The effects of such a small increase aren't flashy or obvious, but they're still real.
