Ah, sorry bfe, I misunderstood your post. I agree with you in disagreeing with Barclays, if that makes sense.

You'd have to be pretty dumb to bring copper back the surface. It would be far more valuable in orbit around Earth. Also NASA isn't, ah, the best example of a cost conscious and frugal organization. They probably don't make a good baseline

Actually lack of good development may be the problem. Mike Cardwell's opinion of status.net certainly isn't very high: https://twitter.com/mickeyc/status/236796994532827136 and a lot of disaspora's momentum was destroyed by their early se

By doing this they're selecting for people that have a strong understanding of social interaction. That's understandable, social interaction is the fundamental skill of business and I wouldn't expect many startups to succeed without someo

Voluntary charity can of course be a noble and merciful thing. That said, strike at the fucking root people.[1] The problem isn't slavery. Slavery is a symptom of the problem. The problem is bad economies, which come from bad government. If

What would its advantages be over status.net/identi.ca?

But it didn't actually have to take over, right? It just had to build up a decent user base. Then it could be linked with identi.ca, and they would be linked to whatever came along next . . .

Yeah, this needs to be made entirely clear. App.net is a change in degree, trying to make another twitter, but better. Diaspora and identi.ca are changes in kind, trying to make something different to replace fb/twitter.

That was kind of a badass decision, by the way. It can't have been easy to sacrifice a pre existing user base for Makr.

I like it. Discovery is one of the big problems for startups and anyone working to make that easier deserves thanks.

I think it's less of a "build a replacement for twitter" kind of thing and more along the lines of "build another twitter, but better." So it's a difference of degree, not kind. This sucks. A distributed social network would be incredibly c

Could someone who has an answer to these concerns post a link for the rest of us? For instance, what restricts app.net from limiting access to the API in the future, or from upping the price severely once it's gained more traction?

One reason (playing devil's advocate here) might be to protect people's privacy. Maybe I don't like the clientele at Padmapper or Ebay for whatever reason, and I'd prefer my listings to stay on the site I posted them.

One way to disrupt companies like Craigslist would be to build disseminator sites that would allow you to post to multiple places at one. So instead of the system being: post on craigslist --> data to craigslists servers --> people

I highly recommend EncFS. It's easy to set up and simple to use. The main downside I know of is that is doesn't keep the number of files or their sizes private but, really, who cares?

If that ever changes and HN is overrun (insert dramatic and sad Hans Zimmer score) what about starting a new HN just for programmers? I wouldn't be able to get in at the moment, but someday I'd hope to be able to.[1] [1] I'm assuming you'd
