Nix is getting mentioned a lot in this thread. If anyone's interested in NixOS feel free to email me. I switched to it on my main computer about a month ago and might be able to give some perspective on what it's like. My config i

Anyone know if there's a formal name for this situation/problem? Thanks for the clear explanation BTW.

This is a great point. Fundamentally, how well I uphold the trust of my friends is connected to the security of my computing environment . You damn well bet I want more secure software.

Heh, that makes sense:) I guess when I read "So I'd ask you to ask yourself: is your problem really about meeting people, or is it about staying engaged with people?" ... it seems really obvious that the problem in OP's

Sorry if this seems like a nitpick-- but giving way too advanced social advice to people is one of my pet peeves. Talking to girls in the grocery store or strangers in the subway is horrible advice here. Doubly so because you gave it in the

We have gotten somewhere -- the web has become a decent program delivery system. In the process it's degraded pretty badly as a document delivery system. If you start over I recommend separating those two projects.

Review of reviewers is totally the way to go! It sounds like a "now you have two problems" situation, but it really isn't. Starting from the one reviewer of reviewers you know you can trust (yourself) you can build out to a n

Spam sites are definitely a legitimate concern. I really love the idea of AlternativeTo, but unfortunately don't feel comfortable adding content unless my contributions will be under an open license. So I'm not sure what great stu

You should check out Tent. It's a very promising protocol for social networking. Their docs are at http://tent.io and you can see an example implementation at http://tent.is .
