I've wondered how necessary it is for colleges to force a $50k tuition on students. Where does the money actually go? I'm skeptical. The administration at university just seems like one big, disgusting fraud.

Yep. A lot of sounds tend to get that FM-synthesis flavor. I've found MAX/MSP to be useful when processing audio in realtime or using some pre-recorded stuff (some funky custom flanger on some piano recordings, for instance).

While we're in the vein of FM Synthesizers, if anyone has MAX/MSP, it should come with an example patch called "X-FM~". If you modify things right you can get usable and interesting sounds. In terms of other similar things to MAX/MSP (a v

"After all, working memory is common, but greatness is rare." So...it must just be a combination of many factors. Inherent intelligence or working memory can be useful, but so many other things influence whether you become "great" at someth

It depends. The one I went to, teams formed around the ideas - everyone pitched an idea, then you had to go mingle with people to get votes, then the top ten were the ideas that most people worked on. Usually a couple of teams actually stay

I feel this is a bit extreme. What about many independent game developers who rely on things like Flash Player to etch out a living? I think there could be a nice compromise (other than just "Kill Flash!") with the valid security issues, wh

True. It's also a bit frustrating, reading other stuff on gzip (from where I found this), that the author of gzip wasn't able to make it run as fast as possible because of patented algorithms. Sort of disappointing.

Hmm, upon looking at the quote again it really isn't that great. When I say "played" I mean just getting the notes right at the right time - no other of the many dimensions that can change based on the player's skill level. When a skilled m

I liked the quote on music. Sheet music is good, but as any video can tell you, you can't just play it and expect it to sound good... "Beginning musicians play by ear, to the extent that they can play at all. Then they learn to read music

Cave Story is an incredible game. I'm pretty happy it's becoming more popular now (the 3DS version, the Wii-ware remake) so more people can experience it. I know around '07 there was a pretty large modding community making some real nice mo

It's kind of gross how that market of games is growing. It's really quite terrible, but at the same time genius, at least in the metric of making money. At the same time I don't think there is a need to worry about the gaming industry being

I'm guessing games built upon previous ones? I'm wondering to what extent they borrowed from previous prototypes/work. Also, I wonder what the total dev time for the game was.

If you absolutely can't spend money on anything, I'd go with PxTone for bare-bones prototyping. It runs on Wine. It is point-and-click tracker. http://buzinkai.net/PXTone/tutorial/ It's an incredibly lightweight tracker or whatever, and c

I really wish there would be some way that schools would stop having to worry about these stupid test scores. Hearing "Education" and "SAT" together makes me cringe.

I can't say I would absolutely need any of these things, but their uses seem like they would work well in special cases, like some with some big company or something. I suppose there is a market for these things, but overall I'm not sure ho

Do they only have those stats for "britney spears"? (And if so...why?) I looked (admittedly not very hard) to see if this was some kind of google lab where you query with some phrase and see the misspellings, but to no avail. That would be

I think you have a point with the voting. If only it was that easy in practice - there are so many moral and ethical issues when it comes to drawing a line for "intelligent enough to vote". A standardized test would be hard to impose, since

This applies to countless run-of-the-mill, crappy, casual and free games. As an example, the "energy" system makes me cringe. Instead of offering a game to pick up and play, it limits you and beckons you to come back for more later, unless
