All it takes is one idiot in middle management that thinks "who's going to notice if we just ...". Like the recent Mocality case.

The basecamp page ( http://basecamphq.com/uptime ) tells me at a glance what sort of service I'm getting. The scalyr page ( https://www.scalyr.com/monitor ) doesn't (even after three glances). The sort of data presented there may be useful

Computational cost is not negligible when you scale up. It is very manageable, but it does end up costing extra. Using SSL for all private data is an absolute must though.

There is the inexplicably unadvertised news.ycombinator.com/best for a slower cycle. I prefer it.

If I wanted to look for a job anonymously, the last thing I'd want to do would be to sign in with my LinkedIn profile. I'd probably rather make an extra email account somewhere and use that. It seems way to easy to implement a third column

A few days later I'm happy to report that I don't miss Growl at all and have completely uninstalled it now. Turns out bouncing dock icons are sufficient to point out when an application wants attention.

I've had a shot at fixing the worst parts of the new UI (shrinking the massive button bars and bringing blue titles back). The instructions are for Safari, but the included CSS should work in any browser that can eat a user style sheet: ht

How are new users ever going to try out Growl now? There's no free trial (only an old version that doesn't work well under Lion). I also don't appreciate the way this was pushed to existing users: I got a notification that there is an updat

The disks are quiet, but the cooling fans they often require are not (at least that's what I've learnt from having a Drobo with four 3.5" disks in my living room).

This is one of the best "What the hell does this thing do" pages I've seen. I wish every business had one like that for their products: http://www.twilio.com/api Takes about 4 seconds to explain what their service does. Wonderful.

Oh look, free, anonymous Windows VMs for 20 minutes (it's trivial to open CMD.EXE from any browser in the saucelabs setup). Any statistics on what people run in those VMs, other than browsers?
