Asking why Twitter is so bloated gets 300 upvotes, but asking why Uber SRE is so bloated gets downvoted? My, what a fickle crowd HN is. My assumption was that Uber SRE's played roles similar to Google SRE's. If that's not the

What is Uber doing with 150 SRE's? Wow talk about bloat. The rest of the story is horrible to hear, too.

+1 for replication slots. Just remember to remove the slot if you decommission a server; otherwise storage on the master will grow forever. innobackupex works fine locally on the server, streaming out to netcat or ssh on the remote side. No

Technically riding the dots is still illegal in CA even with the new "lane splitting" law. If you don't ride, you see everything as lane splitting. If you ride, you damn sure know the difference between lane sharing and ridin

Thanks for the follow up! This looks to be a new law. For years it was always lane splitting illegal while lane sharing OK. I've been riding for decades and didn't know about this change. I wonder how long it will take the cagers

Yes, the restore process checks in daily; alarms are thrown if it doesn't check in. MySQL is also pretty good about not starting if the data is corrupted for whatever reason. The process not starting is a pretty obvious alarm, too. Che

LVS/IPVS is OK, but what does it have to do with SSL termination and certificate churn?

My point is that there are sanity checks built into the process. It's not difficult. There doesn't need to be a human verifying things there. Is the row count increasing over the previous backup? Check. Is the checksum different?

It's in there now. Row counts per table and checksums are written out with the backup for every table. If things don't match up, alarm in a loud and noisy way.

I was also wondering about this. I would have put in the engineering effort to migrate to nginx (at least as a front-end proxy) from Apache for this. Seems like a lot of reloads that could be avoided (even doing graceful reloads in Apache g

At my $currentJob, we restore 30TB worth of database restores every day in automated processes. We do this because the DBA insisted that the DB backup process was fine. We tried to restore 3 backups as a test, and they all failed. We no lon

Ironically, that's the way that Microsoft used to operate. They were very big on providing the platform and API, then insisting that partners built the solutions. That was back in the Gates and Ballmer era. I guess that they've le

All but the hottest 10mm loads have the same ballistic characteristics as 40SW these days. Sure, the Army could specify a hot load for the pistol but that's unlikely considering past choices. The hot 10mm rounds are usually reserved fo

You end up with universally bad schools instead of good and bad schools. Most parents would see that as a bad thing and the very rich pull their kids out and send them to private schools (which cost $30k+/year). So now you're left

One problem is that SF doesn't have a gifted and talented program until near high school (and the junior highs are terrible across the board). Even with more schools, the school board would mismanage them. It's easier just to move
