I'm not sure TBH. I've heard that startups and comanies in the UK generally don't offer large stock packages to employees. That could just be anecdata, but that's what I've heard. A 6-7 figure stock-based retention

Kind of off topic, but does anyone know why the real estate around Twin Peaks is so much cheaper than surrounding areas? I know there's a bit of break-in crime at Twin Peaks, but the surrounding areas should be better, yeah? Is there t

Costco is all around the Bay Area. I shop there almost exclusively for bulk groceries. Food costs are reasonable here with little effort.

Stock is worth zero, but good employees will get retention packages to stick around with the new company.

Have you actually done this, or are you repeating stuff off the website? Because everyone I've talked with about kubernetes federation says it's really not ready for production use.

Network people who understand BGP are cheaper and easier to find than someone who actually knows how Consul/raft works. You might think you know how consul works, but do you really? Consul and raft have caused several high profile ou

Juniper and Cisco have lab versions of their products (Olive, vMX, vSRX) for free. Arista has something, too. BIRD is super easy to setup, too.

+1 for BGP/OSPF-based VIPs in a layer 3 network. It's 2018. No reason why you can't easily run a layer 3 network with rich routing protocols. Super easy. You don't need application level "discovery" when the IP

I thought train systems were heavily subsidized by the state across Europe. Why are tickets so expensive? The distance isn't far at all, by American standards I'd expect to pay roughly $20-30 for a train ticket across that distanc

Yeah I wouldn't say a man in his 20's was expected to "provide" for a young family in urban areas. Maybe in the burbs with a rented home or a smaller apartment, but not white picket fence typical Americana. Then again, 1

Eh I bought my place 8 years ago, and I wasn't rich when I did it. I lived in a not-crazy expensive apartment on the edge of the Tenderloin (good side of California but close enough to keep the rent cheap). I was in that apartment for

You gotta do what every other long-term San Francisco resident did: Get a nice 2-3BR rent controlled apartment, then slowly become the sole tenant as roommates come and go. In 5-7 years time, the place will be way below market rate and you&

My question was for people already living in SF who don't want to ride down the peninsula. The choices are limited for bigco rsu grants. Google doesn't have engineers working full time in the SF office. They highly discourage it.

Saying employees got screwed without knowing deal details is a bit preposterous. Weebly pays engineers pretty well compared with bigco salary, has a cash yearly bonus, sabbatical program, etc. The only difference is stock comp. What bigco a
