I did the same in '03. BA released some steeply discounted tickets with the end-of-life announcement; I think I paid $3,500 round trip (JFK-LHR leg in coach, my rationale being I could afford one way and London to New York was an hour

The article misses (although hints at the cause of) a very important difference: Concorde's ability to supercruise, that is, cruise supersonically without using afterburners. The Tu-144 needed to use afterburners during the entire supe

Not without extensive work. It relies on X windows which is no longer part of OSX. You'd have to at a minimum get XQuartz up and running, satisfy quite an extensive dependency list ( http://eaglemode.sourceforge.net/Syst

Yes exactly, much less going on. It's probably easier with an automatic system than a human brain too. A fairly simple feedback loop between an accelerometer and something to modulate brake pressure should create a pretty smooth stop w

Yes, in around 1997 I believe. http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v396/n6708/full/396233a... My read is that the news here is that this is the first visual counterpart to a gravitational wave dete

> lifting your foot off the brake right as the car stops You can do that even if you're braking very hard, and it doesn't have to make your stop slow. All you want to avoid is that bounce back right at the end, and backing off

The article dismisses torture almost immediately, and talks extensively about how being curious and open produces vastly better results than any other style of interrogation.

Memes and jokes generally go over badly here. (Though in mitigation this story does seem tailor made to attract that kind of response.)

A "vested interest"? You got me, I am a paid shill for Big Debate :) There is a lot on this page about what modern debate is and isn't. It's not supposed to be a mechanism for the exchange of ideas or advancement of unde

And also I don't think he'd have chosen Unity either; he talks a lot in the post (or the forum, I forget which) about being very comfortable with QBasic and choosing it for his familiarity with the language.

I don't play as much as I used to, but these days most 2D things I come across are based on Unity. Was not aware of the extensions made in QB64 over QBasic (though I knew the author had extended QB64) - thanks for pointing that out.

There absolutely is when those 20+ seconds are jump cut in the middle of a calm interview. The debate itself was far more than 20 seconds. It is entirely selective. I clicked on the video because I was interested in an example of this high

That’s not really just a recording of the champions is it? It’s a selective edit of bits of the debate with a news interview with the winners. it’s intentionally jarring. Do you have a link to the actual recording? The owner of the clip you

The screenshot is telling: "Framerate: 4" Pretty mighty achievement though: no engine, no frameworks, no graphics SDK, a quirky language...

Yup. There's a lot of stuff that tries to teach that 'programmer mindset'; flow programming is one end of it. My eldest daughter is 5 and is at the other end: the 'Robot Turtles' board game. She likes it. I really d

Fascinating stuff, and all new to me. Those high school debaters seem like they'd be recognized as 'doubleplusgood duckspeakers' in 1984.

My knee jerk reaction was pretty negative, but on only a few seconds’ reflection I think this is great. Absolutely no reason why kids can’t start with C++; it doesn’t have to be template meta programming insanity from the get-go. Motivated

Wasn't aware there was a movie. I'd have thought it'd have been a tough adaptation. To me it's quite an impressionistic piece of writing, not something that would easily translate well to cinema.

I know he's not the most liked, but I am not sure this kind of post - not even a link that can stand and fall on its own - really belongs on HN. Flagging.
