Your situation sounds shitty. It shouldn't be that way; I hope you're able to find time to step back over the holidays. A company shouldn't treat you like that, perhaps another one would be better. Sales is no picnic though.

It's not so different to burning diesel to dig up rocks so you have a chunk of metal to wave around. Which isn't, you'll notice, necessarily a counter argument to yours.

So, I like this line of reasoning. I'll extend it, on the ridiculously generous assumption that 10% of gold holdings will shift into BTC. $300tn * 0.005 * 0.1 = $150bn. That's my stab at a fair upper limit for a supportable market

That's what I was expecting too. How did you do those calculations, if you don't mind sharing? With an accountant, the hard way with a spreadsheet, or (please!) some magical accurate online calculator with 5 fields and a big butto

Thanks for doing this. What about mortgage interest and property tax? EDIT: I'm skeptical this is right. I'm in a high tax state, with high property and mortgage interest. Yet this shows me between 1% and 12% better off despite ev

Exactly. That German person could have bought a loaf of bread in the morning for RM1,000 then sold it to his neighbor in the afternoon for RM10,000. There are no citizens in Bitcoinland dealing with inflationary prices in virtual bread. Any

Fantastic, and nicely written personal commentary on each one too. This is a real treasure. I think I like the Sumtronics Comptometer the most, for its excellent name and its vacuum tube internals. The Mathatron is a close second.

BTC/USD went from ~$9700 to ~$9500 in a few seconds and then market data dropped off the front page entirely, and login page now says "Temporarily Grounded." So that's Coinbase and Gemini both down.

Has anyone got any experience using Emacs with one of those mail tools and gmail with 2FA? I started playing with notmuch half-heartedly but it seemed to expect a local mail store, which is fine but I found myself bouncing between setup ins

Re your AI thesis, I think it’s the exact opposite. Deterministic, rule-based processing applied to lots of similar data are perfect for AI-fication. It’s all in the computer, and you can kick out to a human-driven exception process when re

I saw that. Quite odd. Do they not have the data to be able to say definitively, "This is a Christian house of worship"? Seems unlikely?

I just this morning on the train finished the rather enjoyable Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky, which features a planet of sentient Portia Labiatas. Then came your comment and your lovely Medium article, which made me realize that th

Your counterpoint example to the proposition that text is hard to mess up is... a picture? Edit: or have I completely missed the point of what you're saying!

You’re describing Mathematica. It’s lovely stuff but a bit of a closed system. And expensive too.

I know it’s not the main point you’re making, but gas prices near me (north east USA) absolutely did drop a lot when oil plummeted.

Your final point conflates icbms with cruise missiles - very different things. I don’t believe icbms use TERCOM or visual matching.

That’s not quite an accurate read though, at least as far as NK. The US can’t really make a credible military threat because of the north’s proximity to the south, an important US ally and a country all but guaranteed to be mortally wounded

Aha yes I see. I needed to think more carefully about total curvature. I have been doing a bit more reading on this, really a fascinating area. Thanks for the pointers.

I thought it does have curvature (like a non-flat torus), but that curvature is in effect compressed into 'singularities' at the corners.

To be pedantic it's because of the direction of rotation of the earth, rather than its curvature.
