You're right, but in this case I assumed not the users but the HN-readers were the target audience. And I think many are interested in performance benchmarks. I think it makes a difference wether a site with many requests is quick in compar

What good is this without including some "how busy is this site?"-metric like requests per second? Or the amount of data served?

Hm good point. In this fashion, how would you target say Concert Pianists or Firemen? And where would you post that link?

Weird. How did this spammy self-help blah-blah make it to the front-page? Must be a slow news day or simply vanity: "Hey, I am smart, I want to see what truths I forget! Vote up, cause we're all smart here."

I didn't express myself well. It was an example where a style attribute may be implicit in one browser, but lead to incorrect rendering in another. In other cases it may be a hack. So I guess the advice is: be explicit. btw: Microsoft must

Before using this make sure you write valid HTML and valid CSS. I found this to be the best remedy for IE issues. Not that IE is particularly fond of standards, however, sometimes adding something like "position:relative" to the stylesheet

That will not hinder its success, heh. Vanity blogpost. Look at HN, Reddit, ebay etc. to see how much design really matters. OSX is pretty but I'd argue it's not the neat icons that make it a success. Tsts.. Designers and their worldview.

Youve been played. Its less about advocating anything but more about the page rank of the domains it links to. Lets not be naive. The content here is almost zero and could be summarized with one simple english sentence containing the word '

Uhm... isn't this just spam? It's hardly "Hacker News", is it? Granted, it's a well-made sales-page, but it's just a sales-page. (Interesting though how everyone doesn't seem to mind. Must be the same effect Groupon thrives on.) And who are

The main-point is: To really do something useful with all the data we produce on the web daily, we need to have public APIs that allow to access old data. In my opinion better than all Facebook of the world are things like HTML5, truly open

Again one of these posts where the author doesn't have/write about own experience to back up his claims. (Example: "Most successful startups had a long gestation period" - proof? citation? something?) He doesn't even write his full name in

It doesn't get much easier than git once you have set it up and learned a few basic commands. Free, cross-plattform, fast and sexy.

In my opinion the only interesting advice comes from people that "been there, done that". I don't need to read any self-help crap from people that tell you how something is done without actually having done it. Sometimes they are right and

Thanks for posting this. It demonstrates nicely what is a common phenomenon. I'm also sure it's frequently used in politics and elsewhere to to hide a scandal behind a seemingly more important but in fact less important (or untrue) event. N

Shouldn't you be able to use a web-view inside your application where you display web-ads? Essentially your desktop-apps are web-apps anyway, as the target will (in most cases) be to open a browser-window and display a landing page. As for

I kinda like HN the way it comes by default, even on the phone screen. It loads quickly and can be easily navigated. However, I use http://searchyc.com to look up some older stuff, from time to time.
