Why do you think on-screen knobs is a failure? I personally find them very convenient for the purpose.

It's like a scope for your config. I often do the same to group settings per-package, e.g. for dired.

This is quite interesting, thanks for recommendation, I'll investigate this. Are you aware of any edge cases or inconveniences of this approach I can keep in mind while experimenting?

Yeah, my 'NAS' is going to be a small N100 or 5700U PC, or something along these lines. Have you had any luck running NixOS or Guix on a VPS?

Funnily you've mentioned, I explored this route and found one 'normal' web hosting that provides an SVN repo. But in my case, I need a Git hosting to collaborate with friends on private stuff (I don't like an idea of my

I like the pragmatism in this comment, I think I can unify an RPi with a NAS. My concern was keeping important data backups separate from other experiments, though maybe I'm overthinking it. Thanks for etckeeper, it looks really intere

Are you routing a traffic from a VPS to your home? I've considered a set up like this where my home PC would be permanently VPN-connected to the VPS, but I think the problem was making it secure, e.g. making a virtual network at home t

Most cloud providers don't provide NixOS, e.g. I use OVH Cloud. IIUC, there is a way to run a script that will delete my OS and install Nix, but I think there might be side effects like cloud-specific network setup which will probably

I can't install Arch on OVH Cloud. It's by far my favourite distro, tbh.

Lots of great suggestions here! The original question was probably answered already, but nevertheless I'd like to humbly leave a link to the article “So You Want to Study Mathematics…” by Susan Rigetti [1] — it covers not only linear a

Thanks for the insights! A related question, have you tried implementing “latent updates” of different IMGUI widgets based on whether their data was updated or not? I was kinda thinking how to avoid redrawing everything in a non-forms UI, l

To be honest, I'm aiming to simply practice UI architecture and optimization, and it's unlikely that something will come out of it. But I didn't know about A11Y before — thank you for bringing this up, will probably check it

I actually started tinkering with Dear Imgui, very cool library! From your experience, does this approach scale for complex apps with a lot of data updates, with dozens time series visualized, edited, etc., or am I overthinking?

Thanks! I had a look at signals and slots. Is this similar to Smalltalk's idea of objects sending messages to each other? Like messages they don't know about can be ignored, or something like that (I only watched Alan Kay's v

There're definitely keywords I'm going to Google :) As for hierarchy, I'd like to avoid having class hierarchies where everything is a subclass of Widget, etc. I guess I want to explore how much of the data required for rende

Thanks for the reference, bookmarked! I think this might be too much for current practice goals, as I'd like to practice architecture that would enable me to create somewhat flexible GUIs and then to attempt to optimize it for cache.

Well, he pretty much inspired me to go into this direction, such a great series! I particularly enjoy episodes on memory management, though, admittedly, they're a bit over my current skill level.
