It is also interesting how morality scales. Presumably, when things get back to normal it will still be moral to exploit one family's crisis for profit (or 100, or 1000). But now we've hit a certain number of families the same act

I alway reach for the George Bernard Shaw: "Never wrestle a pig, you just get dirty and the pig enjoys it."

It doesn't strike me as obviously so. As I (probably mis-)understand it, the author is saying that if we take seriously the idea that people can have incompatible perspectives on the world then we can lose a notion of 'truth'

> When the ability to debate is removed, the only thing remaining is force. You seem to be conflating the ability to debate with the existance of objective ethical facts. That sounds like a bit of a false choice to me. What kind of eth

In a cynical moment it has struck me that recent lifestyle trends seem almost designed to market poverty to the middle classes. #vanlife as a lifestyle rather than simply 'living in your car'. A 'tiny house village' for

I wonder if minimalism is better understood as 'enough' rather than 'less'. A carpenter can have no more tools than the they need, even though that may be hundreds of tools.

> A single huge fore-and-aft sail would be too hard to handle This isn't quite right, as split fore and aft rigs existed that solved this problem. I suspect it is more that power replaced sail for crossing oceans and square sails ma

All that can be done in vim. The one related function that I would miss is using vimgrep and the QuickFix list to get a list of the locations where the function name appears which I can use e.g. to do a search and replace in those files (or

I'm familiar with both of those. What I've not seen is hanging weights used to generate curves in boatbuilding, which is what's suggested in the article.

Unless I'm mistaken, in boatbuilding spline weights are used to hold wooden battens on a drafting table. I've never heard of weights being hung from splines to get curves, either when lofting or building.

Yep. I often want a group of windows to behave as one window so that e.g. I don't have to alt tab through them individually. So I will use tmux to set up my editor, shell and dev server. I also use vim splits because that is more conve

Ah, that helps. I struggled with this because I didn't see the first choice as relevant to the final outcome. It is easy to see the game as restarted somehow when the 50/50 choice is presented.

While it probably isn't the main concern, different species produce lumber with different properties. The loss of Elm trees in the uk removed a timber that was very useful for boatbuilding, for example (thought that is a bit of a nich

It is a bit odd. I suppose by this light, men's increased participation in home life and parenting represents a forgoing of their independence and an reduction in their happiness. This does not seem to be the case e.g. in Scandinavia.

I know several unmarried, non-conventional and blended families who seem to disprove the theory that marriage is a necessary condition for a child's healthy upbringing. And it is clearly false that marriage is a sufficient condition.

I don't think that anyone credits Wittgenstein with inventing the term 'private language'. Rather for the arguments/observations relating to the idea. He would not have agreed with the Humboldt remark you quoted.
