Anecdote: I ran a migration on a production database from inside Visual Studio. In retrospect, it was recoverable, but I nearly had a heart attack when all the tables started disappearing from the tree view in VS… …only to reappear a second

What should I be using instead? I don’t mind cmd.exe and it launches instantly (same reason I frequently use notepad.exe for quick edits). That latter quality is very hard to find :) Edit: but if you meant for scripting, yeah, batch files a

Interesting to read that frame pointer omission may not be worth it: > You'd think that saving a whole register would mean a performance improvement, right? Especially on 32-bit x86 code where registers are at a premium. But it turn

Not affiliated with the blog, but apparently Hugo generates an index.xml feed by default, so try this: https://danangell.com/blog/index.xml (I had the same question with a different site two days ago.)

After fairly lonely exploration initially, seeing all the bases at the center of the galaxy (nearly 100 hours later) was a unique experience. Kind of like thinking you’re the last person on Earth and then stumbling upon other people. It’s a

The dumped images are not portable, right? I thought I read they can only reliably be run by the exact same build of SBCL.

What’s the minimum kernel version required? (No need for an exact answer, I just want to know if it’s “in the last 3 years” vs “in the last 10 years” etc.) And is it possible to resolve network names or do anything network related? (Or is i

Despite the pressure to constantly hustle, it’s still ok to take a job just because it sounds fun*. *Obviously, abusing CSS isn’t everyone’s idea of fun.

Sounds interesting, but I didn’t see any actual code. Is this for Clojure? Related: I was able to get pure s-expression pages using Parenscript, Spinneret, and cl-css in Common Lisp.

I also did this, except the XML file itself was generated from a file system tree. XSL did eventually add multiple outputs, but yeah: do not attempt :)

The most commonly missing SSG feature for me is being able to transform relative links between Markdown files (which VS Code happily auto-completes for me) into relative links between the resulting HTML files. Similarly hard to find is tagg

I created md2blog[1] specifically for this reason: it prevents you from making design decisions, so you’re forced to focus on writing posts instead. I’m well aware of the irony of building yet another SSG to help people avoid doing the same

Random unsolicited thoughts on SSGs (from someone unaffiliated with Stuart or Hugo): Not sure if I’ll ever get to it since things are generally fast enough without it, but I’d like to build an SSG that supports accurate incremental rebuilds

I can’t decide if I liked XSLT or just the out-of-the-box thinking its convoluted solutions demanded. XPath was a joy to use, and I thought XHTML made more sense than HTML. But I was naive to think the “more logical” technology would take o
