It's a town of 8000 people, of which 4000 are college students and staff. When you gather that many social justice warriors together in a location where there is no actual injustice to prosecute, they will creatively invent some so tha

Be mindful of confirmation bias when searching reviews. Finding 10 reviews mentioning noise might be because it's noisy, or it might be that they have thousands of reviews and a small percentage experienced noise

Amazon's margins are astronomical. Hetzner doesn't need to give up any where near as much consumer surplus as they do in order to compete on price, but having a solid offering at very low price point is how they have chosen to dif

Juries awarding excessive punitive damages was enough of a problem that many states capped it. Seems more likely to me that, in the long run, this will also occur in the remaining states.

Agree, hours have very little to do with burnout, unless your talking about the colloquial burnout which seems to be used as a synonym for fatigued or exhausted. I've been a workaholic all my life, often working 80 - 100 hours a week f

This is fine for hacking a POC together, but for anything in production I'd want to go the immutable infra route deployed from a CD server, so the visual studio integration doesnt really help. At a high level I'd say, Azure is mor

Tom Scott is perhaps a better example of how hollow monetised content can be. His formula is taking topics that have been covered by other creators, dumbing the content down a bit, adding a sponsor block and a clickbait title. There's

That's not even close to being considered protected activity. Given you've spammed this misinformation all over this thread, despite being corrected on this point repeatedly, I'm not sure you're acting in good faith.

Not sure about the stealth layoff take. It's too unfocused, you'll lose people you want to keep and keep people you want to lose. Severance isn't that expensive and gives a lot more control. Agree with your second point thoug

No facility can produce 30 GW. The new Vogtle reactors are 1.1 GW each, which is pretty typical for nuclear or fossil fuel plant. Steam turbines over 2 GW don't exist afaik. Also, the median new wind turbine in the US is over 3 MW now.

Paying severance to staff you decide you don't want is much cheaper overall than losing staff randomly, which will include your higher performers. It's not a plausible explanation for Musk's actions. I would be inclined to ta

Its offerings arent as broad as AWS, but Hetzner cloud is frictionless, fast to deploy and very low cost. We use it a lot for compute intensive jobs.

I'm not convinced this is a case of "soft layoffs". You'll save on severence costs, but those costs are so small compared to the cost of having no control over who decides to leave.

That's only true if investors think the 10% rates are permanent. Future interest rates are a time series not a single value, and I suspect most will use a lower rate in later years reflecting some mean reversion.

Are the niche subreddits still a safe haven from the superficial glib comments that dominate the default subs? They used to be, but there's so much cross pollination that I no longer find them tolerable either.

Yes, but they forecast growth of 2.5m and analysts were expecting 2.7m - 3.0m, so 200k is still a big miss, albeit only a single data point at this stage.

What you are referring to is monopsony power, and Amazon isn't even close to having a monospony on warehouse labor. Warehousing is massive industry and even at their size Amazon is less than 10% of it. The most realistic solution is fo

Starlink dishes don't have a dedicated heater inside to melt snow. I don't know where the author of the article got that idea from. They are just power hungry and produce enough waste heat that it's not a problem.

The solution to authoritarianism isn't more authoritarianism. If Reddit overstepped in the past, we shouldn't treat that as a watermark for what should be banned in future.
