That makes total sense, thanks for articulating it so clearly. Sometimes I wish I felt more that way, or at least that I could get myself to hate corporate work less. I do enjoy working for myself and freelancing, and that was all I did bef

It mostly just comes down to having kids, right? I am certain that if I were single and happy staying that way, I would be living in a van in Moab and doing the bare minimum amount of freelancing to keep myself fed.

Thank you for everything!! I've shipped quite a few successful apps to clients on Phoenix ever since the beginning, and am about to launch a startup on it. It's truly changed my career more than maybe any other library.

Yeah that's fair. In terms of "things with good perf" I'd rather be writing C++ or Rust, but there are significant issues with using either of those on a large team. I'm more comparing it against languages like Kotl

Having recently had to work on a Go project for the first time, I think I agree with you here. I'd tried Go a little bit when it came out, had zero interest in what it offered, and then when I was asked to work on this project a couple

Same. I can't imagine much heavier use than what I have done to this thing for the past 3+ years, and it still just literally does everything I ask of it. I've never even kept a laptop this long; up until now I would upgrade every

What does "noncommercial use" mean in this context though? These are tools for work - is the idea that students can use them for free and then will start paying once they finish school?

I don't know, but I always tended to get sick after flying. I started wearing a mask while flying during COVID and it's the one place I still do it. Not scientific but I feel like I have gotten sick after flying less frequently si

That is mind blowing, but it’s not immediately obvious to me that it’s equivalent for n > sqrt(INT_MAX). Is it? And if so, is the compiler somehow smart enough to know that?

Thank you - same here. I hate how “trendy” it’s become to hate on SSRIs. Are they a silver bullet? no. Are they overprescribed? Maybe. But they’re one of the few useful treatments for debilitating depression and anxiety that we currently ha

I’ve been on Lexapro for a few years now, and if I skip it for a couple days I get very unpleasant brain zaps and dizziness. If this is a lack of withdrawal symptoms then I hate to imagine what other SSRIs cause! Still, it’s been a life cha

Do you know the current status of gleam_otp? I’ve been in the erlang (and more recently elixir) world for a long time and am quite excited about gleam, but when I looked at it early on it didn’t seem to have a great solution for OTP. Can I

In the past I've had a lot of issues with Google properties not working properly on Firefox -- either outright broken or using crazy amounts of CPU on Firefox but not Chromium-based browsers. Does anyone know if this is still an issue?

Yep that schedule is pretty familiar for me as well. I’m willing to do it when necessary; I feel like it’s fair given the flexibility and trust I’m given as a fully remote employee. When I’ve worked in the office in the past, the laptop sta

I think the worst part is 9) at night, do more work that requires focus time while no one is bothering you, since expectations got calibrated to when everyone had a private office and more control over their own time.

Amazon's value proposition to potential employees is basically that it's the easiest way to break into big tech. It's an awful place to work but they hire people who can't get into to other FAANGs, pay them more than the

How is this different from FLoC? My understanding was that Google came out with FLoC to solve this problem, but then scrapped it when it became clear that no one wanted it except Google.
