How many people signup for sites like these, and return rarely or never use any of the registration-enabled features? Are those "real" users as opposed to FacebookApp-enabled users? I add an app in my Facebook. If it's popular enough, eve

If this app "takes off" on the world wide interweb, it'll be lucky if it has 10-20k users within a few months. If it "takes off" in facebook-land, it'll be doing OK if it only has 50-100k users after a few months.

I've been thinking about this a lot lately too. Chances are, the older you get, the average person will have lived through more "failures" than huge mega-successes. This influences how they perceive the world and their expected outcome. So

Mod +1. I wrote an app in rails over a few long weekends (having never touched RoR or ruby before). Idling on the rails irc channel helped me get through some tough spots. These days there are a ton more resources than there were 2 years

Can you share the URL of your site? Just curious - what are your plans going forward? i.e. continue what you've been doing, rewrite in another language, or what? Not that this is your scenario, but whenever I'm in a crunch situation, it alw

Point taken. Just a nit though: how was del.icio.us making money? I never saw one ad on there before Yahoo acquired them, come to think of it, I still don't see any ads on there.

I think his point was that a lot of Web 2.0 companies are launching with the hopes of quickly getting acquired before earnings are really relevant. Did del.icio.us have any earnings when it got acquired? No. Flickr? Barely. Plentyoffish is

Yeah he talks about that in Founders at Work. After all those schemes he tried that were mentioned in the article, he says one of the biggest reasons for his companies' success has been his blog.

Article also fails to mention he got a boost from adding fake profiles (mostly of women) early on. A forum post of his asking about how to do this is archived on the net somewhere. ... not that I've never done anything greyhat either.

I haven't implemented mass user-generated subdomains in PHP or Python, but it certainly was a snap to do in Rails. User-created subdomains didn't seem like they really caught on until 37 Signals started having huge success.

Yes, "investors" here is a bit broad. Reading posts like this make it seem really pointless to spend too much time seeking investment. Just go out and build a solid business. Either: A) It will work. You will have profits and/or investors
