In theory dividends and share buybacks will be reinvested by the stockholders. In practice I wonder how much just further inflates various asset bubbles.

It's really hard to interpret that graph when you consider things like relationships and marriage, and that older people are probably more likely to be married.

So would you say this is more about your mindset when programming in LISPs? I like to use Clojure for my side projects and don't seem to feel the same way about my programs as you do. Even as a long time primarily imperative/OO

Part of the problem is random bureaucrats have no way of knowing if Joe Schmoe's Web Shop can actually do the job. Some of it has to also be covering your ass - if there are serious flaws in the system, your ass is covered if you spen

Privacy badger detects zero trackers. When I open my developer toolbar, all hits when I search are to duckduckgo.com. When I installed uMatrix, the only thing I see are references to duckduckgo. And zero cookies. This is using Firefox

I think the problem is more serverless architectures than EC2. If you build for EC2 you can probably fairly easily migrate between hosts (at least, for our codebase it is). But if you build for Amazon Lambda there's more vendor lock

You don't need to be able to write down in a blank sheet what you actually want to do if you don't need someone else to do what you want to do. Software developers aren't special in this sense - even when writing our own soft

The massive battles are pretty boring. They also last forever because they slow the game down to something like 10% speed to help the servers keep up. It's way more fun reading about them.

There isn't a lot written about that time. So my understanding could be incorrect. But as far as I know, back in the 40s/50s, programmer meant something different and very specific than what people today might mean. Basically,

How tightly bound we are to just a few large tech companies is... unfortunate. I would love it if it were easier for the common person to host their own stuff. Between all the concerns involved (security, hardware, demand, etc.) I'm n

It might make sense to separate SF from San Jose, but it doesn't make a lot of sense to separate San Jose from the south bay - San Jose borders some of these cities on 2-3 sides.
