I'm not sure what they'd need the higher returns for; it's not like their investors are clamoring for higher dividends. It wouldn't shock me if Apple's policy of not paying cash dividends (in place since 1995) remains only to spite Michael

What does it mean when companies are trolling around looking for "HTML5"? Is that just the new buzzword? Or are that many companies actually interested in building things with Canvas these days? (I hope it's not because they think you need

The minute I type in "blonde" or whatever, the first thing Chrome does is say "The browser would like to know your physical location" before it even begins loading the map. I feel like if I was trying to be discrete about my erotic actions

I'm going to assume you're not trolling, based on your long account history, and point out that this site is evolving, much like everything else on the internet. It's certainly not the "Startup News" it was when I signed up, and at this poi

Direct link to the company: http://www.dotcloud.com/ If someone can tell me which YC batch they're a part of, I'll edit the title - this is the first time I'm hearing about them.

How on earth is this name not copyright infringement? Either against Polaroid itself or against the Poladroid software package ( http://www.poladroid.net/ ). That said it's a pretty cute pun; I hope they get away with it.

At least in the United States, pretty much all geographic information - at the local, state and federal levels - is now being remeasured and stored in GIS formats. I can say first-hand that governments and government contractors are constan

Setting user expectation is a design problem that can't just be brushed away if there is any desire in this thing going mainstream. The user will come into the device with misconceptions - it's up to the designer to manage those misconcep

Neat, I didn't know about the Coca-cola deal. Which if you're as curious as I was, is described here: http://ycombinator.posterous.com/posterous-s08-jumps-on-the-... It's great to see what companies can come up with. :) Thanks.

Totally agreed. But which is it? The decision on any of those models, if not properly considered, could have impacts that reverberate through their product and userbase. Advertising, done wrong, could break their clean aesthetic. Affilia

Felicia Day (@feliciaday). She's a celebrity whose life is nothing like mine, and yet her tweets are the most sincere and down-to-earth of nearly anyone I follow. Her tweets put things in perspective.

The line seems blurry. On the one hand, I'm all for people who want to share their information being able to throw it up - the more feedback the better, right? And it builds a sense of community that can last long past this YC decision. O

I think "beating" is fundamentally different than "hacking." I view hacking as more of an act of creativity, or at the very worst an act of defiance. "Beating" implies that someone has been "beat"; there's a winner and a loser. "Hacking" a

In my experience, the designers are learning how to program way faster than the programmers are learning how to design. (This coming from someone who's doing the latter.) I can't give a good reason as to why; it's just a gut feeling. So in
